More stupidity from England?
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/16059757.stm
Surely moving the base would make more sense than going backwards and forwards three times in 8 days. I don't agree with the ambassador though who says the Ukraine is very European. It isn't; it's very former-Soviet-Republic but that is part of its charm and not something to put people off. Would still be better than the train we took from Kiev to Krakow which took 14 hours

Defo a daft decision. Can see it being rolled out as the excuse for our early exit.

Personally I think they're better off staying in Poland. Having done quite a bit of research on Ukraine over the last few days trying to make arrangements to get to Donetsk for the England v France game it would appear that it is all pretty backward. A short hop on a private jet, which is no doubt what they'll sort out, isn't any great hassle.

Who knows, maybe it will keep them away from a lot of the English journalists and other negative influences. That must be a good thing I would have thought. Also, it is not as if they would drive to the ground, they could fly to the grounds as mentioned by M R Ken. Not a biggy in my opiniion.

I heard the French will be based in Poland, too. That's despite all their games being in Ukraine.

Why don't they just set up camp in Bavaria? Not much further away from Ukraine. Or just stay in England, since they'll have to get on a plane anyway.

I think we all know what England should be working on in training between now and when the tournament starts: To be good in the air.

We've pretty much got it sorted, but trying to get things arranged as a fan has been difficult. We're flying into Kiev, getting an overnight sleeper from Kiev to Donetsk (which you can't actually book until 45 days beforehand, so that's not guaranteed yet), got shocking looking student accommodation in Donetsk (as there is a massive shortage of hotel rooms, which have no doubt been snapped up by UEFA and the press etc) and then flying back to Kiev. No doubt, if you have money to burn or you're going to Ukraine at a different time, it would be a lot easier. We'd looked at hiring a car, but both official advice and stories from people who went when England played in Dnipro a couple of years back say that the roads are terrible and that you get robbed blind by crooked police pulling you over for no good reason. Fast trains may or may not be delivered before the tournament, but currently it's at least a 12 hour journey to cover less than 500 miles. I've sure that there are nice places in Ukraine (sounds like Kiev and Lviv are worth seeing), but Donetsk is a coal mining city described as being famous for its skyline dominated by slag heaps. That said, I'm really looking forward to it. Should be fun! |

They booked the facilities before the draw.
And no matter where they stayed, there would be extensive travelling involved - so may as well stay in the best base and travel a little further. |

The Ukranian officials are bemused because they're looking at it purely from logistical and training facility viewpoints.
The FA made it clear when they chose the squad's base that the decision was made based on ensuring the players didn't get bored, by selecting a venue with drinking, gambling and prostitution right on their doorstep. |

Yes forget travelling by roads unless you know what you are doing...having said that busses are a good cheap way to travel, albeit a little more uncomfortable..but trains are ok..you save on accomodation..and you leave at night and arrive the next morning..no problem at all....but i can imagine in the height of the euros train tickets will be hard to book. apartments and hotels...unless you are prepared to pay top dollar are all a little "basic"....communal heating and water are the norm for residential apartments, dont expect western style decoration or amenities..front doors are made of steel !!! )))))) the language is a problem, not many speak english, and of course everything is in cyrillic alphabet except the metro in kiev which is fantastic and cheap service. you buy blue tokens for each trip within the system for about 25p. I hope to be working in donetsk if i am lucky ...so stay in touch !! |

Having any major tournament in a place where you have to resort to student accomodation is a joke in my honest opinion. If the place is not able to sensibly handle all aspects of what it is to stage an event of this type they shouldn't be given it.

Pretty sure it's UEFA rules that they have to stay in one of the host countries.
