Football League Show and Steve Claridge
I know there was previously a thread about this but couldnt find it to bump it.
I was watching the Football League show last night that i had recorded and after the highlights of our match at West Ham, shock horror, Steve Claridge actually had a lot of praise for Palace. He felt that Palace deserved the win and that our performance to go their and attack was excellent. Also went on to praise Dougie and the job he has done and has got a great balance of solidness and flair in the team and he said teams will ave to watch out as palace are now a team to be reckoned with and going places! That was probably more praise from Claridge in one show than what there has been the enitre time this show has been on TV!!! |

It's true, he made some very good comments. It's at times like this however, where there is all the more reason to highlight the fact that Steve Claridge is still a wanker.

Just watched on iplayer this morning and was thinking exactly the same thing. He praised how we have become very solid, and thinks that with just a bit more attacking flair, we will become a very good side next season.
Isn't that basically what we all see happening?

It's difficult for the neutral to criticise Crystal Palace FC at the moment. Without spending big we have invested in a good young British manager and are actively promoting young local talent in our first team. We've a united club who have fought back from relegation battles in our previous two seasons to beating the English Champions at their own ground, reached the semi-final of a major cup competition and are sitting a few points away from the play-offs. Even Claridge can't argue with any of that.

If you look at NSC you will see that almost every week someone starts a thread about how the show doesn't give Albion enough air time, this week it was about them showing 0-0 games before the mighty Albion, they are actually discussing how they will be portrayed on Match of the day next season!
Back on topic, I thought Claridge made some valid and complimentary points.

He's alright. He's got nothing personal against Palace - he just airs his views as a neutral.
I've seen things said on the BBS by fans of the club that are far worse than Steve has ever said.

He replied to my on Twitter and said he wondered why we all think he hates us.
He then said "At least you didn't end your tweet in #steveclaridgeisawank*r which seems to be my adopted name from CPFC fans now" Haha ![]()

Cutting but true. Perhaps the BBS should have a Steve Claridge Wan*** of the year award. Could be a few contenders. ![]()

Lets not forget Wembley and start bumming him off just yet.

To be fair to Claridge he is getting better at the job. Something about the FL show just makes it unwatchable though, MOTD is a lot better (and not just because of the teams).

You have to remember that the WHU game was probably the first full game he would have seen for a while. All he watches is highlights put together prior to the show and can only make a judgement on that.
But he is still a bit of a wanker. |

Claridge is an odd one as he sometimes talks sense - and other times really doesn't*.
However, for me I'd rather watch his pundetry than that of MOTD etc, as he actually is enthusiastic and keen on the football league. Fair play for following a 'proper' league instead of the national love-in that is all things top 6 of the Prem. *I mean that not in relation to Palace specifically, but generally on football topics Last edited by Windsor_Eagle : 27-02-2012 at 01:31 PM. |

I like Claridge; I think he comes across as a decent bloke, speaks as much sense as any TV pundit, is relatively balanced in his views, and doesn't take himself too seriously.

Very true. He's just a pundit that some fans are paranoid about. |

Yup. Although because he doesn't always praise Palace to the hilt he must hate us etc. Cringeworthy.

He seems to have a fair wealth of knowledge of the championship, leagues one & two respectively, but is incredibly mundane as a "pundit"
