A half fit Beckham is better than anyone you can replace him with.

Play play play! Need him, sad but true.
As long as he can manage without hurting himself, and no one will criticise.

What the hell does it matter who plays? Eriksson is tactically hopeless and the vast majority of the players hopelessly tacticless. Stand by for an early exit by team and then manager.

we simply need him. He's one of the few players that worry the argentinians and he can wind up simeone

Judging by the success Sven has achieved as manager of various top flight clubs across Europe, I would disagree with the view that he is tactically hopeless, and would prefer to highlight the inadequacies of your average English footballer.
Simply we do not possess the talent, yet, to take on the world.

Lets hope we get a free kick in the Beckham Zone on friday. Thats all we need him for. It was his corner that got us a goal on sunday, without that we would barely have had a shot let alone scored.

Only half agree with this. Yes, it's too early to condemn Sven as a failure, but his failure to react to the match on Sunday was quite worrying. He should have taken Beckham off earlier (he'd created the goal and done his job, but he was out of the game for too long before being removed). I also felt the midfield was crying out for an authoritive player (Butt) and the nous of Sheringham. It was obvious for some time that things weren't working and the Sweden goal was inevitable. I also feel that he hasn't prepared the team well enough and did not use the friendlies to establish enough continuity in the team. And no we're not the world's strongest side in terms of quality but we do have more than enough talent to beat Sweden and Sven was tactically beaten on Sunday. This doesn't make him a failure of course, and the one quality he does have is that the man doesn't seem to panic. That quality could prove a real blessing to us now. |

i tend to agree with Jaffa - England do not possess enough talent. Most of the players are uncomfortable on their weaker foot, a lot of them lack the passing ability that other teams have throughout the side and some of them lack the composure necessary to deal with pressure.
World cup 2006 is a more likely target for England because by that time, players like Jermaine Defoe,David Dunn,Carrick,Joe Cole will have more experience and will be able to augment the line up that we already have. |

England will lose no matter who they play so perhaps they should rest him so he is fully fit in time to play Nigeria.

Another "my glass is half empty" thread.
England are in the World Cup - Holland arent. England drew against a reasonable team - France & Portugal didnt. Sorry to be so unfashionably upbeat. I was hoping that Beckham would come off the bench with 40 minutes left rather than play from the start but what do I know? |

Tricky, ideally I would replace him with Dyer, but of course he is unfit too.
I agree with the earlier comment that Sheringham should be given a place, playing behind Owen and Vassell. On this basis we should play 3 at the back with a 4 man midfield comprising of Beckham, Butt, Scholes and Hargreaves/Cole (Ashley). I think we definitely need Southgate on the pitch as well, Campbell and Ferdinand were very poor and need leadership

Would 4 points be enough??
Its a sad endictment of the state of our international side that we have absolutely no-one of world class to replace him. In fact, he is one of two world class players we have (the other being Owen, and Rio maybe). He must play if we want anything out of the game. David Dunn would be nice. ![]() |

Are we going to be looking at a new England team for when the next set of qualifiers come round?
Out with the Seaman, Sheringham, Keown and Southgates of the side and in with the Woodgate, John Terry, Carrick, Defoe, Dunn and maybe even Bowyers? Soon there will have to be a transition, might as well do it gradually.
