This in 2000. Calais were actually in CFA 1 (the French Div 4 ) and only lost out to Nantes with a very debatable penalty in the 90th minute IIRC!

To be honest I can't remember. I'll have to do some checking up there. However when Auxerre did the double in 1996, they beat Nīmes in the French Cup final. Nīmes were in the French 3rd Division and thus qualified for the then European Cup Winners' Cup. They even got through a couple of rounds.

In spite of their success in 2000 and also in about 2006, when they reached the Quarter-Finals, Calais have had a pretty rough time of it. They did go up to the French 3rd Division the year after their famous cup run, but have twice been demoted for financial reasons, and I think the club actually disbanded (administrators etc) and was renamed. They are now in CFA 2, the equivalent of the 5th Division.

When minor French clubs go on cup runs and have to play against bigger pro teams, they often agree to play at their opponents' grounds or the match is played at a bigger ground nearby. For example, the other night, Quevilly played at Caen's ground (20,000, I think). This is what will happen, I presume, if Quevilly qualify for Europe!

Will do. Don't forget tomorrow night's French League Cup final between Lyon and Marseille. Lyon are favourites since Marseille are in meltdown at the moment, but they can be so unpredictable too. Plenty of Pastis and peanuts to get the evening off to a good start.

2 3rd division and semi pro sides getting into the semi finals.

How is that? Top teams putting out reserves and the difference in quality not being that great?

Even in the League Cup here you rarely get 2 2nd tier sides making the semis, let alone 3rd tier or with the regularity they do in France.
