No real afinity with the club

I'm surprised, actually, I'm not, regarding some of the posters on here stating that some Palace players have 'no real affinity with the club'.

What does that mean ?

Are we expecting the players to be fans, like us ?

Or are we looking for hard working pro's, that will give their all....but maybe not be able to make a function ?

I think it would be great if we had passionate players, that gave their all for the club and also had a soft spot for Palace....but I don't expect them to be fans. Great if they are.

At the end of the day they are professionals, and professionals in any walk of like move from one job to another. The whole 'affinity' thing confuses me to an extent.

Yup.

The hype surrounding us signing Boyd from the Posh just because he is a Palace fan is a prime example.

If you wanted people to play for Palace because they had a passion for the club you'd go down the Jolly at ten to 3 on a Saturday and pick the myself and the guys in there to play.

Professional footballers is the key word here. Not really bothered if they have an affinity for the club or not, they are paid to do the business on the pitch, that's all I'm worried about.

I do get annoyed though when we are losing and the subs are laughing and joking whilst warming up whilst all of us are pissed off. Like when Kolinko laughed when he was a sub and we conceded a goal - Trevor Francis lamped him one. Fair play.

I think with most players, moving to a new club would be like moving house. You love the old one, you have some very happy memories, but it's time to move on.

I think some fans seem to forget that football is actually a job.

I'd argue that we've got more players that have an 'affinity' than I've seen at other clubs? So I think we can be proud of it.

I think the likes of McCarthy & Speroni are examples of players from outside of the area/setup who are pretty dedicated.

All you can do is support the players that come in, and thankfully I don't think we'll see too many of the 'wrong' types whilst Dougie is manager.

Literally move house in most cases. It's worth remembering that as a pro footballer, you may be required to relocate to another part of the country on fairly short notice, and all that goes along with that (new schools for the kids, new house, leaving friends and family behind). Players who have been at a club for a relatively long period will be well established in the area. It's their home. Also, young players who have come through the academy will be well established locals - they might be fans of other clubs but they will certainly feel an affinity for Palace.

All the players support the teams they play for, but, in a different way to the team that they love. I also think a number of players keep a low profile on the team they support.

A lot of people on the BBS spout a lot of shit about how players feel, how hard they train, how lazy they are, when in fact they know **** all. Close season and transfer windows are an especially bad time for this kind of thing.

Yeap rarely these days do footballers have any affinity. Would say Speroni might be the only one at Palace at the moment. Any of you guys think our young stars might have an affility with club and want to stay forever....think again.

one club players are unusual these days, but it's not outside the realms of possibility that we have one

I don't think it matters a jot where the players come from or who they support away from working for Palace - when you do a job, if you are a professional, you will do what you are paid for or find yourself replaced by somebody better.

Plenty of dyed in the wool Palace fans have played for the club and had to move on - plenty of players that were born nowhere near London, let alone Selhurst Park have come to play for Palace and either been accepted as Palace legends for their efforts at the club or have also become followers of Palace too because they have fond memories of Palace - you can often read in away match programmes of players that have left Palace and still have a real 'affinity' for us.

Pretty obviously, younger players, who have probably been at Palace for several years as junior players may look a bit laid back about everything, it's easy to understand if you have ever been involved in football, as far as those players are concerned, their team is the U16's, U17's, U18's etc and that is where their interest is, just because of they have Palace kit on, they probably aren't that excited about sitting around watching a team they may be some way off playing in - if they've been playing football every weekend since they were 7 years old, they are hardly likely to have the same depth of passion as a Palace season Ticket Holder, even if the players are actually Palace fans.

It's the job of the management at Palace to create an environment that players such as this buy into, as players and professionals - not as Palace fans - that's what managers such as Busby, Shankly, Revie and Clough did years ago - it's what managers such as Rowe, Graham, Head, Allison, Venables and Coppell have done at Palace - created a spirit and an environment that the players want to be part of, as players - when it works, those players usually do have a real affinity that lasts for a lifetime.

You seem to be mistaking having an affinity, even a love, for the club and a lack of ambition. I personally can't see a problem with a young player loving Palace but wanting the chance to play at Man Utd at some point in their career, for example. Good players will always want to progress and challenge themselves.

My very first car was a MArk I Ford Escort. I truly loved it, and was gutted when I get a new and (at the time) infinitely superior car.

I remember looking back at it in the garage when I left it for good.

Loving and leaving are a part of life.

I wouldn't argue that the Zaha and Clyne don't, that's been proven, they may have a soft spot but they know that they will outgrow the club. Scannell definitely does have an affinity to the club, he's been in and out of the first team for years now watching players being signed to play ahead of him, and he has said himself that he loves the club.

I think Williams is one that does also feel a real connection to club, having come to watch as a season ticket holder and being in the academy since the age of eight. That isn't to say he will stay forever, he's bound for the Premier League in a season or two, but I think he does have a genuine fire to push the club forward, like Dougie does as you can tell with the way he speaks in his interviews. Paddy's been here for five years or something now and I'd say he may be the only other.

Have to disagree - nobody performs well "depressed" or tense. If a player goes onto the field wound up there is a much higher liklihood of a daft mistake, OTT challenge and red card etc. The fact that they feel relaxed enough to laugh is a good thing, time enough to be "focused" when they come on.

I wonder how many Palace players support the bigger clubs ?

Would you call them wankers or scum for doing so even if they wear the red and blue but support the red or blue ?

I actually think we have more than that, maybe Wilfried and definitely Scannell for example. Scannell has gone on record as saying he would sign for life. In the long term, having local players coming through the youth team can only increase the numbers with an emotional attachment to the club.

I doubt he has any more affinity than most. They are his employer, doing well for Palace is in his best interest, equally the better Palace do the better his experience / development. One day he'll move on and whilst he will hopefully look back with decent memories, Palace will just be a past club. The only people who have the sort of "affinity" that most mean are the fans. Their link is forever, players, staff, managers are passing through, some just stay longer than others.
