Suggestion - Besart Berisha

This young Albanian international striker has had a stop start career due mainly to injuries but looks to have finally found his feet in the Australian A League playing for the Brisbane Roar. Reckon it would be worth sending Popo over to run the rule over him during the close season in England? It will be the peak of the A League season if we liked what we saw so he would be in good shape to start pre season with us. Interestingly all of his goals last season came from open play. That's a very good return in an ever improving league. Here are his Wiki stats and youtube goal reel....

Opps, bit embarassing that. I don't pay much attention to the A League but have seen this guy banging them away. I asked a client of mine a few years ago how Melbourne are getting on this season a couple of weeks after they had lost in the grand final. He wasn't too impressed.

What do you think about this suggestion? Would he be any good for us?

There are two things to consider before signing A-League players, both relevant to this guy.

Firstly, the A-League isn't that good. Nicky Carle was a fair player at Bristol City and a flop at Palace yet he's an absolute star in the A-League. Similarly Paul Ifill was a solid enough pro in the Championship for us but in the A-League he's one of the most feared attackers around, certainly the man to stop if you're playing the Nix. The A-league is probably League 2 at best. That doesn't mean there aren't players to be signed from there but, if Palace is looking at them then it has to look at them as being similar to lower league or non-league guys, i.e. we should be looking at a dominating youngster with potential to kick on, not a dominating pro in the prime of his career, because soon he'll be on the slide.

Secondly the A-league plays about 30 games (including play-offs) to the Championship's 50 (including cups). In other words, players only have 60% of the workload. For a guy who has, as the OP says, "had a stop start career due mainly to injuries", this is a god-send. Again I refer you to Paul Ifill, who was a well-known sick note as a Palace player. Now playing in the A-League, he seldom misses a game. The respite of the shorter and less arduous season has been the making of him. But I'm sure that if he returned to Palace or Berisha signed, their injury woes would re-emerge.

Reasonable finisher, could do a job but not really the type of player we need at 27. Wouldn't be any better than what we already have. Plus he's an absolute cock.

Too slow

Besart is the sort of player that if he is on your side you love him but if not you hate him. A playing version of warnock. My feeling is that a league football is a good few yards slower than the championship. Teams like the roar at good possession football but perhaps due to the heat (it's a summer game here) at a very languid pace ; a bit like Italian football. Mohammid adnan is a brilliant player for the roar but again too slow for Palace. None of the recent exports have done well , mckay, Orr, kruse, sarota, barbarousis all bench warmers.

Hughff, interesting pint re Ifill. If he is setting A leaugue alight, it must really be a lowish level. Had one good game in 10 for Palace, when fit.
I never thought we got the best out of Carle, I suspect Warnock was the wrong manager for him.

Okay, say at worst it's league two standard football. We signed Dougie from that level from Barnet with a very similar goal ratio. He didn't turn out
too badly now did he. We have to explore options.

Berisha is not the answer.

Don't get defensive hulkster - I'm not having a go at you. There's no problem with asking this sort of question but you also have to accept that others on the BBS might be closer to that info and wish to share it.

IMO, A-league is at best League 2 therefore, as I said above, we should be looking at youngsters who've set the league alight and have the potential to improve, not guys in their prime. At most we can hope is that they're going to be merely competent at our level and they'll only deteriorate as time catches up with them.

Nice thought, far from the stupidest suggestion I've seen in this forum, but one that I'd reject.

Re. Carle, maybe/maybe not. He was good for BC against Palace but was far from universally loved there IIRC.

As for Ifill, your memory may be a little unfair. He had a good career in England, including an FA Cup Final, and my memory of match reports was that he was solid enough for us except that a high percentage of the matches he played he was playing himself back to fitness after yet another spell on the physio's table.

I thought Ifill was good enough for Palace, but as hughff says he was always coming back from some injury or other. At his best he was a decent Championship player, and that is the player doing well in the A-league. I think to say the A-league is League Two standard "at best." Is very harsh. Take Brett Emerton for example, he hardly set the league on fire this season, yet at the start of the year was a regular starter for Blackburn (who are pretty much now a top end Championship club). Kewell has been good, but not as good as your Thomas Broich/Shane Smeltz/Carlos Hernandez/Paul Ifill/Besart Berisha etc. and he was being sought after by sides like QPR (similar position to Blackburn)

The worst of the A-league is conference level (GCU/Adelaide) But to say Brisbane are no better than any League One side is just not true.

Lets not forget that the A League is a fledgling comp, less than 10 years old,and in a tough market with League Afl and Union as competing codes.Although as has been pointed out its played in the summer. There have been some first class matches this season woith Brisbane as stand outs (very well coached) Recently the game has been shooting itself in the foot with some very bad publicity. That said there are some exceptionally good youngsters CCM have Abini who is off to Germany and the young lad at Sydney looks another good find. If you want a decent GK most of the clubs have exceptional talent between the sticks.
