Summer Tests 2012: England v South Africa (Final Test)
I am looking forward to Lord's tomorrow, even though it's 'only' West Indies. The England Lions comfortably beat the tourists at Northampton last week, so England shouldn't have many problems in winning this one provided the weather holds.
It really doesn't seem that long ago that the Windies was THE team to beat - in the 1970s and 1980, they were the best team in the World. The IPL has not done the present side any favours, with three of four of their top players unavailable. Still, there will be practically a full house at Lord's for the first three days of this Test, so there should be a great atmosphere - and you never know with Cricket (or indeed with the England Team). Anyone else going along tomorrow? |

I have the next four days off work and with the time difference will be home today for the afternoon session. I sense an argument with the wife coming if this one goes the distance. I hope the weather doesn't interfere.

England win the toss. I was hoping we'd lose it.
I can see us having them at 90-6 in these conditions and then the match is effectively over.

Just a shame that Gayle, Narine, Dwayne Bravo & Pollard are at the IPL and for some reason, Sarwan is scoring 100s for Leicester instead of playing at Lords. If it wasnt half a reserve side we were playing against then the 3-0 scoreline at the end of the series would mean a lot more.

possibly right mate, but still better than most of the shower of sh*te that play instead! The 4 at the IPL and Sarwan would, for me, all get in this side ahead of who are there! Agree? disagree?

Not sure about the others, but am I right in thinking that Gayle is not playing test cricket at all at the moment?

As far as I understand it, all of the above aren't 'centrally contacted' like our lot and can basically set themselves up for life by playing a few years in the IPL instead of for the Windies. The Aussies, English & Sri Lankans all arrived at the IPL after international commitments and, like in the case of KP, left the IPL early to go back to it. Those mentioned have been there from the start and will be there at the finish. Just think its a shame. I love the IPL but playing for your country and in international cricket should always be the pinnacle and for these guys its not. The Windies side of the 80s was class and at the top of world cricket. Take Chanderpaul & Roach out of this starting 11 today and I think they would be below Bangladesh & Zimbabwe.

Pollard's a big swinging batsman who can bowl a bit. Good fielder. He's played for South Australia in the hit and giggles for the past few seasons. Not test standard, not even close. I don't think Narine has played test cricket either, he looked ok in a few ODI's vs Australia. Definitely not an automatic choice. Gayle would get in (obviously), Bravo has had enough chances to do something, not consistent enough.

32-2 now. Narine has been great in the IPL, I know its T20 cricket but nobodys been able to score off him in the tournament. Take your points about Bravo & Pollard but still think they are miles better than some of the guys playing today as they are even further away from being test standard than Pollard is.

Bravo's test batting average of 31 and taken 86 wickets at 39.
The invention of T20 along with the financial rewards will no doubt keep these stats as they are until the IPL dont want him any more and he's recalled to the Windies side at the age of 46!!

I think Sammy and Fidel Edwards are some way above that level too and Barath has looked quite handy so far, but yer i see your point. |

Sammy is a 1 day player. Decent, but not really a good enough bowler or batter to make it on one discipline alone. Poor mans Dwayne Bravo. Barath has looked ok so far to be fair but still not a test player for me. On his day, Edwards is good but rarely these days has his day!!!!!!!!
