Blatter wants an alternative to penalties

"Fifa president Sepp Blatter has asked Bayern Munich honorary president Franz Beckenbauer to come up with an alternative to the "tragedy" of penalty shoot-outs" ...

Blatter referred to the "tragedy" of shoot-outs after Italy's win, although four years later he suggested having all draws in World Cup group games ending with penalties.

He's an idiot.

"Hawk-Eye, a camera-based system, will be used by independent testers during England's friendly against Belgium on 2 June, although match officials will have no access to data and the trial will have no impact on any contentious goal-line decisions"

Slightly missing the point?

Technology in football won't work, it is evident in every single match currently recorded. It will cause more controversy than it solves; and that is if administered fairly. It won't be long before mysterious technical glicthes benefit the wankers et al when it matters.

The worst thing about drawn games is that the ET periods are generally dull.

Someone suggested having the shoot-out BEFORE the extra periods. This means that one team knows that in the event of a draw, they've "won" the shoot-out while the other team knows they have to score in ET as they've "lost" the shoot out.

I thought that was shit and removes the drama of the penalties, albeit at the expense of a less exciting extra 30 minutes... Even when it was golden goal, most extra times were shit, Eng v Ger at Euro 96 apart!

I vote for endless replays like the good ol' days of the FA Cup.

I dont mind penalty shoot outs in major tournaments like the world cup, but like Saxoneagle I'd prefer it if FA Cup ties in particular could go to additional replays. The thing that always amazes me in penalty shoot outs is how many so-called top class players miss the target - how the heck can someone who spends all their working lives kicking a ball not be able to hit a target that big when it matters. If its saved then fair enough, but there shouldnt be any excuse for missing the goal completely.

So whilst he refuses to embrace goal line technology he reopens this old chestnut again. How else do you settle a game in that situation? They've tried golden goals, counting corners or using some other stat to settle things is even less satisfactory. The fact is that penalties are part of football, they require skill and nerve and even as an England fan who went to our semi with Cardiff last season I can't think of a better way. They won't be scrapped anyway, Blatter is just a waste of space.

The sooner they get rid of them, the better. They're an abomination. It fundamentally goes against the spirit of the game when so many important matches are won by teams that make little or no effort to win during normal play.

I think they should play extra time and every 5 minutes each team has to take off a player, with less players on the field the game would open up.

What about an immediate replay while everyone is still there in the stadium?

The difference being the first 11 picked for the start of the first game cannot start the second game.

What's the point of, for example, winning the World Cup.?You can win it without winning a football match. This is where football is now. If you know you are mightily inferior, park the bus and hope for pens. How can that be good? The game has been completely devalued by it, no matter how much fun a shootout might be. Like so much in life these days substance is ignored in favour of a quick buck and the illusion of success. If it is what it takes, go back to 16 teams at the finals and stuff the money. Make winning trophies for football something worth attaining again. The maximum pleasure for the maximum number of people is what we live by today no matter how much illusion is involved in getting there.
