Lets hope the alternative is someone putting a gun to Blatters head and pulling the trigger.

I reccon they should just play extra time, then golden goal with one player having to come off the pitch every 5 mins.. Makes it a bit more tactical for the manager on who you take off.
That or a game of twister.

I want an alternative to Sepp Blatter, let's call for a task force to investigate that instead.

Funny all this comes up after a week of the German press moaning on endlessly about Chelsea's "unjust victory".
As Jonesy said, 'they don't like it up them'. Even funnier that the pen maestros, Germany, will be the main losers. Oi Blatter ! why not sort out the bigger anomaly of top teams playing the Champs League final at home ?? Should always be on neutral ground. ![]() |

Said it before a few times I think...
Two simultaneous games of one touch keepy uppy and you have to go through the team from 1 to 11. First time the ball bounces, that team loses. The freaking out when the donkey centre back hoofs it half a mile in the air would be immense.

The point is, we need to totally do away with any sort of mini-tournament like penalties, free-kicks or shoot-outs that have no relevance to what happened in the preceding 120 minutes. As things stand, we effectively say "sod all the football that was just played; let's play a different game with completely different rules to decide the winners." It's absurd.
All you need is a simple measure that judges one team to be ahead after a drawn 90 minutes and then, with the other side knowing that they must score, an exciting period of extra time is almost guaranteed. I think corners would be good enough or any measure that recognizes which team attacked the most. It wouldn't really matter what it was. All that is matters is that one team knows they're going out if there's no more goals and have to go all-out to attack. I find it incredible that football fans would prefer the status quo. We've seen it so many times, not least at Cardiff in the League Cup this season. If we'd known that we were going out unless we scored (which would have been fair) then we would have had to go for it. It's undeniable that our tactics were to cling on for dear life and take our chances in the shoot-out. It was rubbish. Totally anti the ethos of sport. When it happens in World Cup and Champions League Finals it's a farce. You don't need to be a statistician to know that they've become a self-fulfilling prophesy. Far more major matches end up going to penalties now because teams are too shit-scared to do what they're supposed to do and try to win the bloody match. It's a cancer in the game. I suppose it makes good TV if you don't have a vested interest but when it's England or Palace it's horrendous. Even the idea of taking the penalties before extra time would be infinitely better although I can't imagine that ever happening. As long as one team knows that they have to score to go through, you'll get an exciting extra-time. As things stand, they're invariably utterly tedious. How often do you see an exciting period of extra time relative to the usual over-cautious stand-off. The solution is bloody obvious. |

I quite like penalties, they're a part of the game and require a skill and nerve that is clearly not just arbitrary, this much is obvious by the fact that certain teams are clearly just better at taking penalties and keeping their nerve than others.
The claim that they encourage negative football and teams parking the bus is neither here nor there either. The sooner people realise that defending is an integral and difficult part of the game the better for me. This "anti football" tag that people use slanderously is a load of crap, defending is a difficult are and if a team is able to master it and go a decent amount of games without conceding a goal then fair play to them. Keeping a clean sheet is one of the hardest parts of football and if a team is able to do it then who are we to slander them for it.

Toss a coin for it after extra time. Saves on the nerves.

Here's a radical idea.
How about a replay? |

I would suggest keeping the penalties just the way they are but have the crowd turn away from the action (like Poznan)
Then, borrowing a little from The Voice, the crowd turns round when they think someone sounds like they might have scored. With all that goal-line technology out of use for 99.99% of the time, Hawkeye could be used to see how many fans turned round at the precise moment James Milner balloons it into row Z. If it's a simple majority, Milner is deemed to have scored no matter how rubbish his penalty was. I feel this would sort of democratise the penalty shoot out. The current system seems to penalise the less competent teams.

Lets keep it as it is.....penalties are brilliant,if the Germans can't hack losing on penalties or find they have trouble with the disapointment then don't enter the competitions...welcome to our world.....totally embarrassing for Blatter.

Ideally, events should be settled with both team captains being blindfolded and asked to throw extremely sharp knives at a tied to a goalpost Blatter. The winner would be the team captain landing his blade nearest to Blatter's testicles.

Penalty shootouts are great. They are a test of skill and nerve, and sometimes excellent goalkeeping.
If a team defends for a penalty shootout and win, that's the more attacking team's fault for failing to score. Blatter is a knob.

Wouldnt taking them from a bit further back be a better test though? the keeper would actually be reacting to the shot rather than to some extent guessing which way to dive and the standard of shots needed to score would be that much higher. |

I think pens in pressure situations are hard enough for many players already. Look at how many "world class" players miss.
