What an utterly insulting, intolerant, and patronising post. There are plenty of people in this world who, believe it or not, are not deluded but do experience supernatural events that simply cannot be explained. Nor would they, I'm sure, consider themselves as spiritualists. Such an event occured last year to my father. He was a fireman for 22 years, and is a decent, balanced man, and most certainly not "mad" or "deluded". However, he is certain that what he experienced is what would be termed by many as a paranormal occurence. |

Jonesy, there are definitely supernatural occurences.
But even nature, life itself, for me is pretty inexplicable and needs no super- prefix. What I think James find so ridiculous is those that provide 'explanations' for life and its strange manifests. Thunder is not the work of Thor and the world was not created in 6 days.

I know that you don't want to accept that, and that my post will come across as insulting/patronising. People who want to believe in such nonsense are incredibly defensive when their superstitious beliefs are challenged. This is particularly the case when people believe that greatly loved family members are contacting them from beyond. The need to believe that a spirit remains is immense. I know I will never convince you, and I also know that anything I post on the subject will anger you. However, any unswerving belief in the paranormal is ignorant and invites contempt. |

Interesting article in the Observer out 'near-death' / 'out-of-body' experiences and the brain. I know a very sane person (Dutch he was) who once saw a ghost. But that doesn't mean there are ghosts.

Crikey, you can be so arrogant at times. You are so black and white. Is there really no grey in your world? I can understand, and respect, you not believing (or not wanting to believe) but I think you should maybe word your posts a bit better. Telling someone their father is deluded is a massive insult. I would not be happy if you were to say that to me. Think of people's feelings when choosing your words. Oh and as I don't mean any of that nasty. Just saying.

No, my life is not black and white. I know that there are so many things that we do not understand and that we may never understand. Science finds new explanations all the time, but as each new door is opened, a dozen more appear. So, of course I don't have all the answers. Indeed, I have virtually none. However, when confronted with something that I cannot explain, I don't try to fill in the gaps. THAT would be stupid (and arrogant). The only intelligent approach is to accept that there is an explanation, but that we cannot find it. The banal (and unintelligent) approach is to assume that the phenomenon is evidence of the supernatural. ... and I know that you aren't being nasty. I don't think you have it in you to be nasty ... unlike me. |

A reference to Hamlet written by Bill Shakespeare in the sixteenth century. Since then we have had the Enlightenment and modern science, so that quote has little relevance in today's world.

I agree with you entirely. It seems that many people assume that something unexplainable must be paranormal. In fact, it may be perfectly natural, but we don't know how it happens. I think it's largely in the mind. A friend of mine is completely convinced that a fork was thrown from one end of his kitchen to the other. He was the only person in the house, and he swears blind he didn't throw it or imagine it. I called him a liar and he got quite upset, he genuinely believes that something from another realm meant to disturb him. He's not a liar, and is an intelligent chap. It's strange. Things like messages from the spirit world from a medium are complete rubbish, in my opinion. Some of it might be in our minds and we might be imagining it. Scientifically speaking, all evidence suggests that ghosts and spirits do not exist. Until I know otherwise through personal experience or something supernatural can be scientifically proven, I will believe what the facts suggest; nothing supernatural has ever or will ever exist.
