20/3/90

Division 1

Palace 1 Derby 1

One of those days where you left the game not that bothered about the result...... Ian Wright, in his 5th game back after a broken leg, breaks it for a second time. With the Liverpool FA Cup semi final less than 3 weeks away, what seemed like our only real chance of an upset disappears on a stretcher towards the tunnel (far right). Sandwiched inbetween the ref and Derby's No.2 is Wrighty's replacement, Dave Madden, making his first home appearance since the Blackburn play off promotion match.

Derby restart the game after Andy Gray puts Palace one ahead in the 73rd min. Unfortunately 7 mins later Mark Wright equalises for Derby. Here England's No.1, Peter Shilton, looks on. This was just 3 months before Italia '90 where England had their biggest success on foreign ground. Both Shilts and Mark Wright played a big part in it. Bobby Robson later confessed that our Ian Wright's injury that night probably prevented him making that squad despite his cup final heroics.

A crowd of 3,747 saw us dispatch Luton on an absolutely freezing and foggy night at Selhurst as you can see from Nigel's attire. If you look very, very closely at the Luton player on the ball, i think you'll find it's none other than Ian Dowie.

Strangely enough, this game is one of the more memorable games i've been to because of a certain referee called Kelvin Morton. Yes! the same ref the previous season against Brighton that awarded 4 penalties to us and one to them. We were a goal down in this game through an Ian Dowie header, but then Morten waved his magic wand and in a space of 3 crazy minutes sent 2 of their players off and their assistant manager for verbals! (Danny Wilson, David Preece and Terry Mancini).

This basically paved the way for us to steam roller them 4-1 with goals from Bright 2, Wright & Pardew.

I do remember the Palace humour on the terraces at its best that night after the sending off's. We all took great delight chanting everytime Luton players gave away a soft foul: 'OFF! OFF! OFF!'

Was Kelvin Morten's undoubted love for Palace ever proved? We could've done with more refs like him last season.

The day after this game Coppell made yet another crucial signing that played a large part in the succes that would follow: Andy Thorn £550,000 from Newcastle.

In addition to the other Morton magic, I remember Brighty shoving the centre half blatantly and comically as the ball was crossed from in front of the Arthur for him to head home. Morton ignored it naturally.

24/3/90

Div 1

Palace 1 Aston Villa 0

With Ian Wright probably out for the rest of the season, and Palace hovering just 3 points above the relegation zone, playing the league leaders was probably not the best timing. But Coppell again pulled out a great signing from left field: 30 year old Garry Thompson, languishing in 2nd division Watford's reserves, for £150,000.

Thompson's braun and enthusiasm was just the tonic we needed and he had a dream debut as we played to his strengths, namely lobbing the ball up to his head at every opportunity! It worked, and Villa couldn't handle him, and it was of course Thompson who scored the winning goal.

After the game, a fuming - and very bitter! - Villa boss Graham Taylor, moaned about our excessive use of the offside trap 'bringing the game into disrepute.' Taylor fumed: 'I can go on the training pitch and teach a lot of things, but i can't go out and teach people how to play offside. I'm not interested.'

This is the man that brought long ball football to the top of our game and made a right hash of being England manager, mmmmm........

Garry Thompson waits for another set piece to be thrown in, with Barber nearby.

Another great thread by the way.

1-1! The players mob Bright after his early 2nd half equaliser as Pemberton salutes the crowd-the man that started the chance with the most unbelievable solo run from inside our own half.

Suddenley the belief is there, and Bright makes a run down the left, centres for Thomas, whose shot is saved by Bruce Grobballar on the line.

I can only presume that my mates dad who took these photos, lost his mind like the rest of us for the next 20 mins, as this is the next photo i have....

4-3! Pardew, Bright, Barber and Thomas celebrate the winner. What's most impressive about this picture is some Palace fans at the front there still had the energy to lift their hands in celebration - i couldn't! I just shook my head and body like i was having a fit....

WE'VE ONLY GONE AND BLOODY DONE IT!! The greatest moment in my Palace supporting life: George Courtney puts his whistle to his mouth and blows for full time. We are at Wembley at long, long last! The feeling and anticipation i felt in the seconds leading up to the final whistle, i've only ever felt before when i was a child on Christmas Eve.

Let the party begin.....Bright, Gray and Richard Shaw in ecstacy.

Pemberton clenched fist as Martyn tries to join the party. At the far right of the picture just above a fans hand is cast iron proof of a living miracle: A man with a broken leg is seen sprinting across the pitch! Despite half his right leg in plaster, Ian Wright still manages to run faster than most to join in the celebrations.

We leave the ground in sheer disbelief. The faces in the second picture say it all. You'd think we would've been dancing and singing all the way home, but the truth was we all just sat on the train home in silence, totally drained and trying to take in the unbelievable drama that early afternoon.

My cousin, an Arsenal fan, waited at Euston station to congratulate me on our return, and his first words when he saw our faces as we trundled off the train was: 'Cheer up lads - you won!'

The QPR game was my first away game and (ridiculously) my first ever defeat.

I'd been to around 20 games at Selhurst by then and they'd come up trumps every time...

A superb day - scored after a couple of minutes and then 80+ minutes of backs to the wall defending.

I remember being at the press conference and GT implored Brian Glanville to give an opinion on Palace's set-up, as a connoisseur of the beautiful game, banging on about how he had watched it all over the world and everybody respects his opinion.

Glanville was delighted to do so offering an unflattering opinion on the way Palace played the game!

It always struck me as a strange thing to do, but Taylor was absolutely gutted as his title chance slid away. Don't recall him saying: Now this is a test though!

After the semi final heroics, I think it was in the back of a few of our minds that the euphoria and excitement of a Wembley date may impinge disasterously on our relegation survival hopes. This would just be 'typical Palace' after all. Thankfully the lads kept going and gained a valuable point here, leaving us 5th from bottom but 7 points clear of danger.

The downside though was what looked a serious injury to Andy Thorn, stretchered off after just 15 mins with a suspected broken ankle. The initial reports was that he would definitely miss the final, but the x-ray revealed ligament damage and no break and Thorny declared: 'I'll be at Wembley. I would have played with crutches and two legs in plaster, let alone a ligament injury!'. He actually was able to return just 3 weeks later at Wimbledon with 2 league matches to spare.

Div 1

Palace 2 Charlton 0

Again, not the greatest picture but a significant game where this win rubber stamped our survival and finally doomed the Clowns mathematically to Div 2. There was a bit of piss taking on our part towards their support, but definitely nothing in the league they put us through in 2005.

We could now enjoy the build up to the Cup Final thanks to goals from Thompson and Bright. Here Martyn kicks up field watched by a 15,276 Selhurst crowd.
