Higgs Boson "God particle" discovered
if you care!
"There comes a time in a scientist's life when the weight of evidence can no longer be ignored. That moment came today for physicists at Cern, home of the Large Hadron Collider near Geneva, who announced overwhelming evidence for the obscure but profoundly important Higgs boson, the particle that sparked the greatest hunt in modern science. In presentations given to a packed auditorium at the laboratory on Wednesday morning, and webcast around the world, the leaders of two research teams, who worked independently of each other, said they had spotted a new particle amid the microscopic flashes of primordial fire created inside the world's most powerful atom smasher. Cern stopped short of claiming official discovery of the Higgs boson, even as many physicists conceded the evidence was now so compelling they had surely found the missing particle. Formal confirmation of the discovery is expected within months, though it could take several years for scientists to work out whether they have found the simplest kind of Higgs particle that theories predict, or part of a more complex picture: for example, one of a larger family of Higgs bosons. The discovery of more than one kind of Higgs particle would open the door to an entirely new realm of physics." http://www.guardian.co.uk/science/bl...-coverage-cern

Watched a few documentaries on this is the past. They weren't sure they'd find any evidence despite the very complex machinery being used
Most of the calculations make my head spin but still interesting stuff

As much as most of this stuff is over my head I'm still impressed.
These are the people our kids should aspiring to be- not celebs. I would hope that schools use news stories like these to interest kids into the sciences.

Excellent - now perhaps we can finally dismiss 'God' as the creator of the Universe. God is dead, long live the HB!

Ah yes, but who created the HB? I don't really think that, but you know what I mean... |

Being Agnostic mmmm
What was before Big Bang, before what was before even, no scientist has ever put fwd even a remotely good explanation. Almost like we are programmed not to get it....must be something that put us here / or the building blocks, God, Aliens, something ? |

Many scientific theories that involve quantum physics/mechanics, including the big bang, involved this so called "god particle". The particle had to exist in order for these theories and rules to work. But until today this particle was only, itself, a theory. Now we have the proof, some of these theories will now be accepted as scientific law. Religion however, still relies on miracles to explain itself.

I was talking to a Physicist the other day who said the guy who is credited with naming it The God Particle actually said "That God-damned particle" but the US press removed the 'damned' from the quote.

Our human brains are programmed and taught entirely toward time processes and action/reaction. They can't cope with it the thought of anything steps out of this pre-conceived set of notions. ... so the common name for it was never meant to signify that it can stand in for God, just that it was hard to find. But carry on!
