More Immigrants = Less Austerity

Some on here won't agree with this.

Higher levels of immigration over the next 50 years would spare taxpayers from the need to endure much greater austerity, the Government's fiscal watchdog has said.

But it's nice to see the fact officially acknowledged - immigrants are good for the economy.

I do have a problem with this.

I believe we need to move away from an economic model based on increasing population numbers; ultimately, down the line, it is unsustainable. Whether it's demands for housing, food, water, energy etc.

I am in no illusions that moving from our current model would happen overnight, it's just that it would be nice to see a start.

As long as whoever the person is contributes to society by working and paying taxes, then the pot we all draw fom gets bigger. Simple.

Its those that don't contribute or start retiring too early that are the burden.

But there is a finite point to population expansion. We already have severe strains on our environment- look at the decline in wildlife due to human expansion.
And we should probably look at encouraging internal migration more; we have large numbers of unemployed folks up and down the country but no real way of helping them find work and supporting them moving around the country.

It's easier for an external immigrant to come to London and get housing than an unemployed chap from Bradford who's come south looking for work.

Assuming all these new immigrants put more into the pot than they take out then they wil grow the economy. Also assuming that by them coming they are not making a native unemployed who would then be an extra burden on the economy.

To pay their way and cover the additional expenses on the education system, the NHS, the local authority amenities, housing stocks etc they need to be coming here and making loads of money not doing minimum wage jobs.

Solution - kick out any immigrant with less than £1million. Cut tax rates for the rich and get more rich immigrants here to boost our economy. I like your thinking Maz

Nope. Imagine you're a blue-collar worker; perhaps a cleaner. You're now unemployed.
You have a wife and kids and have a council house.

If you try to come to London to look for work, you could end up losing your council house and given some manky flat to put your wife and kids in.
Or you may be so far down the waiting list you're given no house or flat at all, and have to find private accomodation. It's one thing to risk the uncertainties if you're a single man; but if you have a wife and kids?

It may be no easier if you're an external immigrant, but surely we should be looking at making internal migration easier first, rather than relying on external migrants?

It's a simple fact that many on the right cannot accept (or more likely understand) - on balance immigration is good for this Country and its economy.
