Ramadan has always intreagued me. One year I'm going to give the fasting rules a bash just to experience the physical side of it. My assumption is that it will be a positive experience.
Despite my lack of belief I did "do" Lent one year and it didn't change my opinion of Christianity one iota. In fact I ended up thinking that most people who were "doing Lent" were actually doing it on their terms which, IMHO, rendered the whole exercise pointless.

Not sure you can compare Lent and Ramadan. Lent is all just a bit of a symbolic thing and not really a well observed religious festival.

I think most Christians "do" Lent because they are Christians. I would be amazed if doing it made an non-Christian a Christian.

It depends on which branch of christianity you follow, in the Orthadox faith the Lent and general dietry rules are quite tough |

I worked in a Bank where most of the staff were Christian. I was surprised how they did a full fast during Lent. Dawn to dusk.
It was not like "giving up chocolate" for Lent. |

Here a lot of the lads picking fruit (massive business here) are muslims. Spare a thought for the poor feckers working all day in up to 40 degrees during Ramadan. On hot days I usually drink 3-4 litres of water, they can't even do that.

The fasting bit I get and makes a lot of sense (one Muslim mate of mine explained that its good to get a reminder of what its like to feel hungry) but the not drinking water bit, to me thats plain daft. This same mate came to Croatia with us a couple of years ago and would not even go swimming because he did not want to get the sea water in his mouth.
I think its taking it to far and I genuine cannot see why God would want you to do that. Fasting I fully respect and feel its something that a lot of us could do with taking up for a period each year (especially me) but the not drinking water bit, that just seems dangerous to me.

I think that's kind of the point though. How does one appreciate a lack of water if you've never been starved of it? There are people that live lives without clean, safe water to drink. People who genuinely cannot fast without water for health reasons are naturally exempt. However, everyone else can drink in the morning, and then drink in the evening. The fasting is for us, and to learn from it, and appreciate that which we are without. And that's getting off easy. It's only for a certain number of hours a day. Imagine having to live that life everyday. That's what ultimately humbles a person. When you step into someone elses shoes, and walk the walk. If you don't feel the effects of something, then do you learn anything from it?

Maybe Muslims should try slitting their throats and seeing how it feels for an innocent creature to bleed to death in agony, all for the purpose of halal. How's that for walking the walk?
