Liverpool 9-0 : Capital Gold commentary


Found a tape cassette of the Liverpool 9-0 I recorded from Capital Gold with Jonathan Pearce doing the commentary. I know it's one of our most embarrassing moments but thought i'd marry it up to the video footage.

In someways this game defines us as much as our famous victories. I honestly believe that had this not happened, the unbelievable events at Villa Park 7 months later may not have either. The humiliation kind of galvanised Coppell and the team into really stepping up a gear and of course getting the ultimate revenge.

Wish I had the Pearce commentary for the semi final - he must've been hysterical!

One of the best away games for atmosphere. The second half was just non stop singing, even after the game.

And we played ok, Wright hit the inside of the post, we missed a penalty and I think we had a couple of one on ones.

I remember they brought on Aldridge for his farewell game just to take the penalty.

I never went but I heard a story where the Palace fans where kept behind whilst they let the pool fans out. The Palace fans started chanting "your not singing any more" once all the pool fan had gone.

I recall listening to it and turning off at 6-0. School the next day was hell. I remember someone had written on the blackboard "9-0 nice one Palace" in the science room - teacher was a Palace fan.

How ******* sweet it was going in after the Easter holiday and paying that shit back ten fold...

One of the links off the side of that game is for the 3-0 defeat at Anfield in 1979 which at the time was my furthest away trip. Another case of us not playing too badly - though the highlights would have you believe we didn't touch the ball, which was bollocks as we were still trying up to the last minute (sure Swindles either hit the bar or whistled one just over in the last couple of minutes). Remember being escorted back to the station by mounted police and at some kind of under-pass being stopped and given instructions to 'run like hell' to avoid a hail of stones and bricks from up top!
