R.I.P Eddie Sammut
I attended a cremation service today for a friend of mine, Eddie Sammut. I had known Eddie for many years as a manager in Little League Football and as a referee in the Croydon Sunday League.
Eddie, had a season ticket in The Whitehorse Lane Stand for many years. The Cremation Service was delayed for 45 minutes today, because the Hearse broke down - in Holmesdale Road! Spooky or what?

Thats sad. Sounds like he provided good service to the local sporting community. Hope everyone appreciated the irony of the breakdown!

I am sorry to hear of your loss. As has been said, I hope everyone appreciated the irony of the breakdown and that it managed to bring the tiniest of smiles to those that have lost.
Maybe it will be a good talking point in years to come. RIP Eddie

Sad news. I remember Eddie from past Little League days. He had real enthusiasm for the League and helped give local lads including my children a lot of joy in playing and learning the game on a Saturday morning. Condolences to his family and close friends. RIP Eddie.

Yep, Eddie was a good guy, he also worked at Thornton Heath Rail Station, so some people may know him from there. He had myeloma for about 5 years and had a bone marrow transplant along the way. I was hoping that medical advances might keep him going a bit longer, but it wasn't to be.
I had a great chat with his kids ( David and Laura). David lives in Wigan now and is due to get married in a few weeks. I think David used to work in the Club Shop some years ago. Dean Sammut, Eddie's nephew was part of the CFFC youth system a few years ago. R.I.P. Eddie. and thanks for helping to provide so many local kids in Croydon with the opportunity to play football on Saturdays mornings through Addiscombe Little League.

Thanks for that. You couldn't have scripted it any better. The Hearse breaking down outside the home of Eddie's beloved Palace was a major talking point today!

I first met Eddie at the Whitehorse Lane End terrace in the mid 70s. He used to go with his Dad. I always remember his Dad saying Rachid Harkouk who was a bit of a head case but capable of doing the unexpected would be 'OK'. His Dad was right and Harkouk or 'Spider' became a cult figure as Palace got promotion from the 3rd.
Eddie lived near Davidson Road and I'd often walk with him to Selhurst to the match in the days of 'The Team of the 80's'. I stopped going to Selhurst in the early 80's when I became a Dad but met Eddie again in the late 80s when my eldest Son and later my youngest joined Little League. Eddie sure was a committed person to Little League and both my boys were better for the experience in belonging to it. Last time I saw Eddie was when we walked along Lower Addiscombe Road in late 1993. I remember we chatted about politics, the recession and redundancy and of course, Palace. A good guy, as has been said. God rest his soul.

When I saw the name Sammut I wondered if he was any relation to Dave, as it’s not the most common surname. Dave did use to work in the clubshop and is a big Palace fan. I went to school with him for a few years & he was a right laugh. Thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Eddie was my first ever football manager. I played at Addiscombe little league for the Stirling Chiefs, I've still got the shirt at home somewhere. We won the league & cup in my first year (the medals are about 4 feet from where I'm sitting!) so naturally I thought he was a genius!
He left at the end of that season, the 96-97 one, but I still used to see him walking along Tennison Road on his way to Palace from time to time. I was still 9 playing 13 year olds when I started but he really after us all, such a top bloke RIP Eddie, thanks for the memories ![]() |

Great that you have such memories of Eddie and Little League.
I am the only adult still at Little League from the first season ( this is our 30thyear). I still bump into ex managers and players when I referee men's games and I know that, like you, people still recall the great times that they had and are still proud of their medals or certificates. By the way, we are a registered charity - when are you going to return that football shirt! ![]()

Thank you for the further background. My son also got into the Palace youth team set up and had a good time there until being released. And it all started at the Addiscombe Little League. Keep up the good work. |

Dean Sammut told me that he is with Whyteleafe at the moment. What is your is your lads name then Alf? - I still remember lots of the players names, even after 30 years. It is really good to hear that our relatively non-competitive style of football and ethos of accepting any child who wants to play football, still provides a basis on which players can start to develop into high calibre players. David Wilkinson (Palace 3rd choice keeper) of a few years back, was Addiscombe's most high profile player. Other Little League's have produced some talent too. ( e.g. Kevin Campbell, Jason Cundy, Neil Sullivan, to name but a few!).

If I said James T you may remember him. Initially he just tagged along to 'ALL' with hisolder brother David until he was old enough or probably big enough in his case to play - both were 'Knights'. I helped run them with Frank for a while. - enough clues for you? Unfortunately James got injured at the wrong stage of his time at Palace was released. Otherwise, who knows what might of happened. David W's dad would remember James. I used to see him in the Holmesdale Stand where we both sat. I still do sit there. |
