Wireless connection
I'm a bit of a Luddite when it comes to technology, but also, having tolerated Virgin's services for many years, reluctant to change everything over to another provider. Their wired broadband connection is fine, as are their phone and tv services, but I'd like a wireless option which doesn't involve me having to faff around with another provider but enables me just to go onto a network when I need to. So the question is, which is the best pay as you go wireless provider? I can get a BT wifi signal and they charge from £5.99 for 4 hours up to something like £39.99 a month, but are there other similar options I can tap into on an as and when basis? I've got a Virgin superhub but I am reluctant to use it as a) I've heard their wireless signal is pretty sh*t and b) whenever I try and modify anything regarding my services with them it always ends up with me having to spend hours on the phone to them trying to get things resolved. What I;d ideally like is to keep their wired connection and have a wireless alternative as a back up when I need it, but without a commitment to a long contract that involves blowing Virgin out.

Just buy a wireless router that can handle a cable input. Choosing one is a bit of a pain though as there are so many on the market at varying prices. Personally I would just look on amazon (or other reputable site with customer reviews) for cable router that is N rated (most modern ones will be) and if you want to spend a bit extra look for dual band. They will all have instructions inside on how to setup the network.
The other option is to at least try the super-hub first as you might be pleasantly surprised. We have one and although it does require the occasional reset (power on and off) it generally has signal throughout our house. |

if your happy with your setup the way it is, other than wireless signal, then just buy a Ruckus wireless point. You can pick them up for under £100 second hand and they are very good. They use beamflexing to improve signal strength

Buy yourself a wireless router or check with Virgin, they should provide you one for free, but they may slightly up your monthly rate.

Until I read this last part like the other posters I would of said just buy a wireless router for your existing virgin connection. But when you say alternative i presume you mean either.... a) you mean alternative provider so that you don't need to make any changes to your existing Virgin contract? If so just to clarify you would not need to make any changes to your existing contract to gain Wifi, you would just plug your existing modem into a new router that has wifi and job done (one of cost of buying a router yourself which can be done for as cheap as £45 for a good quality one) or/and b) maybe its just the part of having to plug in a new router that concerns you if you put a new one in if it goes wrong and need to call their support etc? yes it can be a pain if you actually have to call them, but really it should just be a case of plug the router in try it out, any issues can always just use the modem/any other router you have been using. or... c) If you mean "alternative as a backup" so that you have the redundancy of a separate provision in case Virgin is down then you would probably need some kind of additional contract with another provider which could be costly. I.e additional phone line, internet provision, router etc. If this is the case and it is just a backup if 3G is fast enough in your area then it would be pay as you go when you need it. Would only be cost/performance affective if used purely as a backup though. Its something im looking into myself at the moment as my Virgin connection does have its moments as well. |

Thanks for all the replies. What prompted my enquiry was I was in Spain the last couple of weeks and whilst there had my MacBook Pro with me and managed to get a wireless signal to a provider from my apartment. €23 for a fortnight's connection. No router, no nothing, just paid via PayPal and off I went. I see that I can get signals to various providers from here at home but the only tariff I have accessed is the aforementioned BT pay as you go one.
I may try the Virgin superhub but read this http://alconcalcias.blogspot.co.uk/2...st-when-i.html and you'll see why I am apprehensive. Virign are fine when it's all running smoothly, but in my experience, try and upgrade or tweak anything and that's when the doo hits the fan! |

Al, if you've got a Virgin Superhub then that's all you need. Our superhub is hard wired to one pc but it also wirelessly serves three other computers, a tv, blue ray, three iPhones, an iPad etc. without any problems.

So, just reading this thread in slight confusion. Is a superhub basically another name for a wireless router?
I mean, the wireless router in my home does all of the same things Blind is saying above ...

Virgin superhub - super is not a word I would choose to describe it.

They will only supply you with a superhub now, nothing else.
Its only savng grace is that you can put it into modem mode and run a separate router.

Why on earth don't you just try it al and see if it works for you? I certainly haven't experience any of the problems Alderhorst alludes to, ours works just fine.

Have you read the blog from above Nigel? Put me right off changing anything with Virgin. A total nightmare. Maybe if I have a few days when I don;t need it for work purposes I'll give it a go, but I'm very wary to say the least!

Try this which doesn't require you to change anything on your hub.
Look on the side of your hub al and you will see the name of your device and its password. Grab one of your wireless devices and search for any wireless connections. When you see the name of your hub, click on it. Then enter password. Bingo

I'm not set up yet! Still contemplating it. I don't really need wireless, except as explained, as a pay as you go back up, but when junior gets a PC it would be handy to have. I'm just concerned that with the 'superhub' being down in the living room and him being in the loft conversion, from what I've read, the signal will be a bit sh*t.
PS - just watched a video about installation which advised to point it in the direction you want to get a signal from and not to put the superhub near a telly. Er, it's connected to a set top box? Also, search 'superhub' on twitter and most of the comments are negative. Just not convinced it will enhance my online experience. Last edited by Al From Bromley : 08-08-2012 at 08:35 AM. |

this - most routers provided today for home broadband connections are shurely wireless enabled? and you have said that you have a superhub. Everything is in your hands - you shouldn't need to ask virgin to do anything.

I'm no Virgin lover and obviously I read the various forums before having cable installed. Despite what I read it really is a piece of piss and ours is very stable. One point I did raise was when they initially installed it behind the tv, the engineer said it was fine and that's where most people's had them fitted. The resultant wifi signal was poor so I rung and complained about the location of the installation and two days later they came and installed it where I wanted it and the signal has been excellent ever since. Can't you just test it using a smartphone? Regarding distance, I can use my iPhone on my Superhub from the pub on the other side of the road. Make of that what you will. ![]()

Im not familiar with the super hub, but i would presume it maybe has some spare lan ports. If so would recommend using homeplugs from living room to the loft if you experience issues (if you have spare power points of course) |

Blind, my phone is an old Nokia. I don't even use the web on it (to me, phones are for phoning, computers for computing) I told you, I am a Luddite when it comes to technology. 1905, what are home plugs?

homepluds enable you to send network traffic through the electric plug system in your home, the two home plugs have to be on the same circuit though.
You can do some fairly impressive stuff with them if you use them with decent wireless gear as well. Getting a wireless signal around a big old house is hard, you need decent kit if you want to enjoy using it instead of fixing it. |
