2012 Vuelta a España – Cycling’s Final Grand Tour of the Season
The 2012 Vuelta a España will start on 18 August 2012 and will be the 67th edition of the race. The race will begin with a team time trial on the streets of Pamplona best known for the bull run and will end, as per tradition, in Madrid on 9 September.

There is a tendency for la Vuelta to spend the majority of the race in the northern half of the country, as that is where most, although certainly not all, of the tougher mountain climbs are. However, this year takes it to an extreme with Madrid being the most southerly point reached!


It promises to be a hard race which should favour the real climbers with 6 mountain top finishes.

The two favourites for the general classification are Alberto Contador and Chris Froome. Contador returned to cycling last week after a ban from the 2010 Tour de France for use of Clenbutarol and is the overwhelming favourite with the bookies.


Froome will be hoping to better his second place from last year and his runners up spot on the podium in Paris three weeks ago.


The sprinter’s jersey will be harder to predict as most of the big names like Cavendish, Griepel and Goss will not be present, and, as is often the case some riders will use it as a warm up for the World Championships in September. The favourite will probably be Spaniard Jose Joaquin Rojas.

TV coverage will be via Eurosport and a highlights package on ITV4.

For the armchair Directeurs sportifs amongst you there will be a Fanatasy Vuelta courtesy of Velogames (http://www.velogames.com). All you have to do is create a team and then add the BBS League Code (13113431). at the bottom of the page. My own squad, A Team of Alan Lees, are defending BBS Velogames Champions for la Vuelta, and will be raring to go after a poor showing at the Tour de France.

Pleased to hear ITV4 sticking with the cycling theme. I will enjoy my evenings next week in a holiday cottage in Devon catching up on the Vuelta. So tempted to take my bike with me as well.

Off topic slightly but anyone know if the Tour of Denmark will be covered by a network as well?

It was a difficult team to pick. Will the names we remember from the Tour still have the legs? What sort of form will we see from the riders that did well at the Giro? Is it best to pick men who have made the Vuelta their only grand tour this year?

Eurosport covered the tour of Poland so they Are probably your best bet.

You're asking for advice? I was thinking of asking your opinion on one or two riders juding by your recent performances.

I'm off to the Alps for 10 days or so with family and friends.
First week will be in the Chartreuse (roughly between Chambéry and Grenoble) so I'll be hoping to "do" the col du Granier, col du Cucheron, col de Porte and the rather aptly named col des Mille Martyrs
Then we should head on to the very pretty village called St. Sorlin D'Arves (above St Jean de Maurienne) which is 4/5 km from the top of the Col de la Croix de Fer so I'll probably be doing that plus le col du Mollard, la Toussuire and le col du Glandon (which I did last year from the Alpe d'Huez side and it almost killed me!)
I doubt I'll be posting very much in the next 10 days or so, so good luck to everyone who's got a team in for the Vuelta. 16 teams so far with a lot of the usual suspects.

So, having selected a bunch of randoms in the velogames earlier in order to just set the league up, I did a draft pick (not showing) which I'm happy with but have 4 spare velocredits.

I've a leftfield rider on 4 credits, that put's a bit of pressure on that choice as I could go for the likes of Gilbert.

Hmmm. Let's see what comes out tomorrow. Deadline is 6pm UK time I think.
