Things to do in Dorset..
Off down there for a week soon, with the wife and boys (aged 6 & 2) staying in a little cottage just outside of Weymouth, anyone been to this area and can recommend family things to do? Obviously the weather will do its thing so ideas for indoor and outdoor activities, recommended beaches, etc, perhaps any little hidden gems off the beaten track would be great to know about

The best things in Dorset are outdoors - Corfe Castle, Maiden Castle and the coast is hard to beat particularly around Lulworth Cove and Golden Cap

Loads to see and do in Dorset. Chesil Beach is a great sight - the shingle is tough to walk on though, Sherborne Castle, Thomas Hardy House and Museum in Dorchester, Abbotsbury Swannery and Tropical Gardens by the Jurassic coast, Portland Bill to name a few.

If the kids like animals, you could try Monkey World, near Wareham.

Sea Life centre just on the outskirts of Weymouth.
Plenty of bays around if weather good. Can get crowded Monkey World, near Lulworth Cove (I think) + tank museum. A bit further afield Seaton tram and Pecorama at Beer, near Seaton DO NOT SIT OR WALK UNDER THE CLIFFS - anywhere in Dorset esp west of Weymouth - they tend to fall away without notice. and of course lots of good pubs (outside of Weymouth)

There used to be a land train thing at Hengistbury Head. No idea if it is still there but I loved it when I was six.

Don't say rabbits on Portland.

The fossil shops and crabbing in Lyme Regis.
Fossil hunting in Charmouth - the younger one might be a bit small for this. (Tho sometimes its easier for the little ones to spot them!) Crabbing at West Bay. Chasing cows over on Golden Cap. Monkey World has got some good climbing frames that will keep them occupied. On the other side of Dorset Corfe Castle is well worth a visit. Last time we went the kids could dress up as knights etc. Highly recommend the beach at Studland Bay. Great for the kids. And cream teas in Chideock! The best I've ever tasted. (There is also a pub in Chideock which does wood fired oven pizzas, but only on Thursdays. Well worth a visit but it does get rammed.) If it rains there is a soft play area in Weymouth - been in there a few times. |

Tyneham Village. Deserted during the war and the locals never returned. Free, but you have to check the roads are open as it's MOD land.

These are the reasons my family and i upped sticks from the delights of Addiscombe and came down
If you like a real ale or cider please head down to the Square and Compass just outside Swanage in Worth Matravers, its a great pub and the governors family have owned the pub for five generations, the ownership being passed down each time to the male heir,

It's still going strong and is just as popular with anglers wanting to get to the long groin or double dykes for a spot of fishing. It makes me chuckle seeing them sitting their with all their gear surrounded by excited kids shouting mucking about. Loads to do down here, in sunny Dorset.* *actually it's pissing down at the moment. ![]() Square and Compass is a good call pubwise.

Wow, thanks for all the tips everyone loads of ideas for us to visit.
What are the best beaches? I'm talking sandy, and if possible off the beaten track a bit, also child friendly places to eat for lunch or dinner would be good? |

If you like your privacy you should go to sandsfoot beach, near sandfoot castle. Its a little tucked away beach that only a few locals use, a real gem on a nice day and away from the grockles (holiday makers) with lovely views. you've also got sandsfoot castle ruins there with nice gardens with ponds that the kids will enjoy. also I would recommend visiting little bredy, the kids will love it, its a little piece of paradise, dorset at its finest. then you've got the usual stuff ie. monkeyworld in wareham, sea life centre in weymouth, bowling, cineworld etc.
