Palace V Millwall 1961 attendance record to be broken
http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/sport/f...h-tier-1265251
I didn't even know we held this record, but looks like Rangers are set to break it. We can't even sell out a game in the 2nd tier anymore ![]()

Knew we had the 4th division attendance record, but didn't know it was a world record for the 4th tier.
Still got the record for English football though, which is what counts.

Never knew it was a world record but I'm actually happy to see it broken. The Scottish football clubs showed some real bottle by degrading them to the 4th level and justice was served so I am happy to see it broken for all the right reasons. Also credit to the Rangers fans for bothering to turn up in such numbers.

We have never sold out a second tier match either. The best we ever managed was just over 40k on Good Friday 1969 against Middlesborough. Mind you we also had around 36k the next day for the visit of Portsmouth. I think its fair to say that we could not attract almost 80k fans in two consecutive home games today Great point by Raggy, Brighton home attendances have never been close to a good number of gates we had for Millwall, or even Charlton, Chelsea, Arsenal, Spurs or Shammers. Indeed QPR at home in the late 60's gates were bigger than Brighton

Blimey it must be sun stroke, how could I forget that one!! Mind you the attendances that season were average, Burnley was a big (but nice) surprise. OK other than Burney we never sold out a seconf tier game. Indeed Millwall was not a sell out in 61' although with grass banks around three sides of the ground it would have been difficult to have seen many more than 45k in the ground that day. By the time the Burnely game came around, we had much more concrete terracing and the wooden crush barriers had gone ![]()

We broke the Fourth Division record twice that season. We also got over 36,000 for the Peterboro game.

Don't think so - in the imediate aftermath of Hillsborough the capacity was limited at 30k. Upon reaching the 1st Division, the club widened (doubled) some exit steps from the Holmesdale Terrace (particularly Compound 1) so that the capacity could go up by another few thousand. Home to Man Utd on 21/4/1993 we squeezed in 30115, but I think that was the only time we went over the 30k mark at home in the last 30 years

That's sad that.
Having said that in 2004/5, the likes of Arsenal, Man U, Liverpool and Southampton would have easily got 30K, had we the capacity and that at £35 per head. That was only 8 years ago!

I recall that we had over 42k for a home cup replay against Liverpool in 77 or was it 78? Not a sell out but not bad for a 3rd division club? We also had over 40k for the Tottenham home game in the second division in 78.

I think the Play off final does not count as a second tier game, as it was a little bit extra. Palace Watford was around capacity, but I doubt if Selhurst was still a 50k ish capacity that we would have got near that figure. 35k perhaps, we only had 36k for the Fulham game in 69.

It was a sell out no tickets on the day could be had. Maybe the 30k was a figure set for safety? Between 64 and 69 our biggest second tier gate before the promotion season (league) was 38k v QPR in early 67/68 season. The last game of that season home to Preston had under 8000. We did no hit the big gates until the promotion run in, except for Charlton at home which was either late August or early September. Millwall, Middlesborough, Portsmouth and of course Fulham were all over 30000.

Can you actually remember that game Budgie? 1961 You would have been 7 like me. I asked my dad and he said we were not there as he had a Saturday part time job at William Hills. These Millwall derbies were a proper rivalry. Then the cop out in the 70's came and some stupid little club called Brighton evolved. Never rivals for us. We had our colours changed and our nickname. Only MA could have got away with that. But Brighton rivals? ![]() |

Not a great deal to be honest. I recall I was with my Uncle as at that time my Dad was working on Saturdays. In those days we sat in the wing stand which was the name used for the two ends of the main (then the only) stand. We were at the Whitehorse end of the stand, you had to sit on wooden benches, no flip up seats and they were hard, my uncle used to take a cushion! I do remember more of the first game I saw which was Barrow at home in 59' thats when I was in awe of one Johnny Byrne as he hit four that day and we knocked up 9! Its been downhill ever since For the Millwall game in 61' do recall the atmosphere was much more feaver pitch that the Peterborough game and growing up in an area where there was a fair number of Millwall fans over the next few years Millwall became "The Game" of the season and for me still is. At school there were lots of Millwall fans and I do have a soft spot for them as much as they are our rivals. I used to go to the Den with my Millwall mates if Palace were away and I could not go. Had some fun down at the Old Den. Many of those guys are still good friends and we always have plenty of banter as a Palace v Millwall game approaches. I know Millwall fans get a lot of stick and often it is deserved, but that should be aimed at the idiots who cause the problems. The majority of Millwall fans I know are very passionate about the Lions and football as a whole. They also appreciate Palace and feel that playing us is always a huge highlight of any season. Most of them do not understand the Brighton thing and I confess I do not either? Yes I was at Stamford Bridge when Mullers threw his hissy fit, but c'mon that bit of sour grapes in no way warrents the hysteria we see from some of our fellow Palace fans. No Millwall first always when it comes to rivals for me.
