Bromley Town Centre - The Decline
As a irregular vistor to Bromley I have noticed that this place has bee rapid decline in recent years.
It used to be quite a fashionable place for shopping but is becoming dominated by pound shops/sports direct/tk maxx etc. Whats the explanation? Changing population or the competition from out of town malls?

It is the same on almost every high street in the country, not unique to Bromley. The death of Allders, Kennedys, Woolworths, The Pier and others have left big holes in Bromley. The free parking at places such as Bluewater with a large M&S, John Lewis and House of Fraser also make it very difficult for both Bromley and Croydon to compete.

The bit of the high street between Bromley South Station & The Glades is pound shops, sports direct, tk maxx etc but I wouldn't say that the rest of the town centre is like that. I work in East St.
There is also massive redevelopment planned for Bromley South. http://www.thisislocallondon.co.uk/n...pment_project/ |

Wonder if that will spell the end of the Wetherspoons down there?

Quite. I walked past there at half 11 on Tuesday morning and it was on the verge of kicking off THEN. Richmal Crompton's PR people and agents need to remove her name from the premises forthwith.

Bromley North seems to be opening up a new restaurant every week......
They need to improve the pubs though, I like O'Neills but the rest are decidely dodgy, especially TP's Sports Bar which is a lot like I imagine hell to be like, only with fishbowl cocktails. p.s anyone tried buddha belly yet? Last edited by Oddjob : 17-08-2012 at 12:30 PM. |

People don't buy clothes on the internet in general. Bromley used to be full of the trendy young people you now only seem to see in Oxford St and the Westfields. However, now its main demographic seems to be pensioners and chav families.

I see that your location is Forest Hill. Surely you've noticed that the relatively tiny High Street there now has 2 bookmakers, 1 pawnbroker, 1 pay-day loan shop, 2 charity shops and loads of dodgy fast food establishments. Apart from William Hills, they've all opened in the last 7 or 8 years. Pretty well every high street in the country is the same. It's just the most visible symptom of the recession and the decline of traditional shopping habits. Extortionate rental prices probably don't help either. |

The Glades is still acceptable. I was pleased to see Whittards reopened, and Superdry is a good addition. Bromley needs another department store though. Only Debenhams is left. A HoF or John Lewis would be good.

Sure Forest Hill isn't great but I would say it has improved over the last ten years. There are now about 5 trendy cafes and the pubs are now much nicer which I would attribute to the overspill from East Dulwich. Maybe a trend away from suburban living for the middle classes, with more now choosing formerly no-go areas in zone 2 and 3 (like Peckham and East Dulwich) helps explain the decline in areas like Bromley.

I was suprised to see Superdry open a store and will be interested to see how long it lasts. Uniqlo became an Iceland pretty quickly.

I quite like Bromley, think it has all the shops you need and is under a ten minute drive for me, couldn't really be arsed with a drive to Bluewater, last time I was there they had 2 HMV's, who needs that?
