Bristol Crush Palace as Fans Turn Nasty
Ok, so my Bristol review went a similar way as the last blog, have a read if you feel like doing so! Themes this time are the defeat, the fans response and the abuse being dished out by a minority of fans.
www.holradio.net/blog Sorry about the incendiary headline, just an experiment to see how people respond! Hope you enjoy it, but if not, it's only a few minutes of your life I have wasted.

Cheers chaps!
It's very hard to express on both Dougie and CPFC2010 exactly what I mean but I hope it comes across. I am not giving up on Dougie - it is hard to defend some of the things I have seen and that match was something I want to forget, but I think it would be foolish to write him off. With CPFC2010 it just seems some fans have forgotten that they are people and Palace fans - and that doesn't change now they are owners. Take the BBS as an example - Steve Browett has spent an inordinate amount of his time trying to be available for questions and doing his utmost to answer everything. Everyone on here knows he was a BBSer before he was an owner and he was a Palace fan before he was an owner so even the tiniest attempt to empathise would tell you that he would hurt after a defeat as much as anyone - but he then has to take the grief afterwards as well. Hands up who wants that job! Like I say in the blog, it's actually starting to get to me now. I know that the majority of Palace fans are decent people but it does feel a little like walking against the tide when you try to be rational.

We are all die hard Palace fans and the overwhelming emotion I have, as I assume most of the faithful, having read the threads, is intense frustration. I would be horrified if the grown ups weren't included in this as they are also fans. Frustration is one of the most destructive emotions; everyone has different levels of it, depending on their passion and most have their own way of removing or mitigating it. Social media is the perfect tool as it allows people to vent publicly amongst like minded people which most may feel is a good way of relieving frustration whereas it probably winds them up even more. The grown ups in this respect are the victims of their own success in encouraging this interaction. I love it that they interact with the fans in the way that they do. It's pretty rare in the game. I also empathise with them as fans because spiritually and emotionally we consider the club ours - otherwise why would we continue to post/turn up to games/make a racket outside Lloyds etc. However, they have the added burden in that the club is legally theirs and here's the knub: These are fans have an outlet for their frustration in that they are able of doing something about it. The rest of us don't - other than making suggestions and comments through social media which they have been open to using and the have listened to in the past. That builds frustration and as we've seen both the BBS and HOL working themselves into a lather. Openness can never be complete and so is a double edged sword. However what I think that most are forgetting is that whilst the grown ups can do something about it, it is at risk to themselves. They're going to act rationally and in their interests which is fair enough as they've put the risk capital in. So whilst they are fans, their agenda maybe different simply because their downside is greater, so in this respect they may choose to listen to views or ignore them. They can't appease everyone nor should they. So it does change things that they are owners. I empathise with the grown ups over their added burden, but also understand although do not condone some of the waves of negative postings. I also hope they continue to be open but realise that this sort of backlash is a occasional consequence of this policy. |

Excellent article as was the Watford one, we´re all pretty concerned and with some justification but the abuse of cpfc2010, players wives and so on is an absolute disgrace, I can only presume those dishing it out are incredibly thick.
Anyway I´ve just downloaded a bunch of podcasts from HOL which I shall be listening too whilst I drive through France tomorrow, looking forward to that so thanks for that. Great work Hambo, I do hope cpfc2010 read your balanced thoughts because I suspect you express the feelings of the majority of Palace fans. |

Thanks mate - not sure how far you went back with the podcasts, but those early ones come with a health warning! Been really happy with the team of late though, so hopefully they keep you entertained during that drive!

This is the main bit for me. (and probably the main aim of the blog?) It's fair enough to criticise players/managers for doing badly. (Note criticise, not abuse) But the owners have no control over our performances and want exactly the same as we do. They are fans, they will do their best for the club, they don't want to use us as extra advertising or a hobby like some owners do. They are spending a fortune keeping the club going that we love and there is no way they should be abused when they obviously care just as much as we do. I know SP likes constructive criticism but abuse is completely different. Sorry for getting all that off my chest, great blog btw! And thanks for reading two of my tweets out on Hol Radio on Sunday ![]() |

A good read Hambo.
The abuse and accusations being thrown about at the moment is almost farcical and just plainly rude. But, I do feel a lot of the frustrations and divisions between our support are symptomatic of having a manager that everyone has a personal affinity with. He's obviously struggling, but because of his legend status fans are finding it difficult to directly critisize him for the situation we find ourselves in, so instead they get irrational and start looking around elsewhere for a scapegoat. Hence why 2010 are getting it, Lennie Lawrence, some players, their wives, Curtis Fleming and even Phil Alexander! I'm waiting for a post putting the blame directly at the feet of Joyce the Voice myself. However, this doesn't excuse the abuse, especially the conspiritorial rubbish being aimed at the owners of all people.

It's so nice to read such a well written and reasoned piece. I was starting to wonder if there were any decent, rational Palace fans left. Well done.

I agree that the personal abuse people have thrown about is totally over the top. I don't think anyone tries to mess up so no need for it.
Have your opinion but try and show some class. A good lesson for everyone. |
