Parade's End
Finally caught this on iplayer last night.
Thought it was excellent. None of this wishy washy dip in and out Downton crap.

Agree - watched the first series of (move to deep, sonorous voice) "Downton" all in one hit at Xmas after wondering what all the fuss was about and quite enjoyed it, but the second series was absolute garbage - disjointed, huge flashing light indicators that "this is an important moment in history" etc etc etc.
Parade's End though is a different animal completely. Lovely witty dialogue from Tom Stoppard, great actors, and very involving, and supposedly it gets better as it goes on.........

Agree - he was great in The Accused two weeks back, and I remember a superb performance in the Iraq drama, Occupation. Also coming up in Good Cop later this week.

And he played Billy Bremner in the Brian Clough film and Al Capone in Boardwalk Empire. Versatile, or what ?

I try not to judge a cast immediately, but I'll venture this now, some thought certainly seems to have gone into it.

Enjoyed the first part, maybe more so as Valentine reminded me of someone I used to know. Haven't read the books so interested to see where this will go, off to the trenches in ep 2

Well, it doesn't have Jake Humphries presenting it, but I think you'll like it. A cut above your average period drama, with a stellar cast. Rather unfortunate inevitable comparisons with Downton Abbey around, but they aren't really the same sort of show at all.

I didn't view Downtown Abbey at all, so comparisons will mean nothing to me. (Oh, Vienna.) Jake Humphries, chuckle, what a nice young man. He really has done well for himself. See you on F1! Glad it's back.

I've got to say this has been absolutely superb so far. Without sounding soppy tonight's instalment was very moving. I haven't got so misty eyed since watching the film Regeneration or Band of Brothers. Benedict Cumberbatch said some stupid things regarding class/education recently, but he has been faultless in this. Really pleasing to see the Beeb doing some quality television for a change (must be the HBO effect).
p.s. I hope he doesn't die.

I am hooked and I am not sure why. Period drama? Not tick. Posh people? Not tick. But, damn, this is good. A betwixt and between bunch of characters that I want to know about. My one gripe is that the story is obviously squeezed with much left on the cutting room floor.

It is outstanding television. Exactly what the BBC should be producing.
It has made me start reading The Good Soldier.

It pisses all over the candyfloss that is Downham abbey..or whatever it is called. Well scripted and dramatised drama true to the period.
