Wages gone crazy
I can understand some people's frustration at a lack of transfer activity today.
We have signed a number of players yet some members here are still unhappy. I'm going to give the new signings time to bed in before i decide if they are good signings. I definantly don't make my mind up in 2 games or what is on bloody championship manager or other clubs forums. I believe the wages players are on is the main reason we are very cautious in the transfer market & i for one totally agree with our policy. Sky have just said that Yossi Benayoun is on £92k a week at chelsea coupled that with £90k a week for Wayne Bridge & you realise football has gone totally crazy. I would much rather our club is very sensible financially & would even accept league one football if it means that we have a financially secure club. I'm only using those 2 players as examples & obviously realise players at championship level are not on £90+ a week but there are plenty on £15k-20k+. Hand on heart do any of us really want our future jepordised by getting involved in silly wages for what are average players?

I am sure that following my comments on the Twitter thread I might be perceived as one of the whingers but in truth I was frustrated about the fact we'd kind of been promised activity (more happening now of course) without a huge amount going on.
I however totally agree with the op and football surely cannot go on like this.

We are at the bottom...Who would really want to come?
Low crowds = low money... and after all, that is all the modern player is really interested in.. hardly any love for the game, let alone the club.. Hopefully...we WILL get better soon.. but right now, it isn't looking to bright is it.. |

This is why it's extremely important that Palace invests heavily in scouting. We should expect one or two players to get through into the first team as squad players at the very least every year from the academy, but this needs to be supplemented by bargain buys and cheap gems. Both internationally and domestic.
Otherwise, as evident from this transfer window, we're only going to fall behind even further competetively in terms of what we can offer contractually.

Even £5-6k a week is a joke for the average Championship player. These players aren't even in the top 1,000 in the world yet they earn salaries that in any other sport would only be earned by the very best.

Wages in Football are madness. Agent fees, goal bonuses, appearance bonuses (W.T.H. are they here for anyway?), signing fees, loyalty bonuses, weekly wages, etc etc. I'm happy that the Palace board don't play to that beat, I can only imagine that Inland Revenue are going to get harsher on Football clubs that go broke.
Also the premier league clubs that buy young Englishmen with talent and let them rot in the reserves or just loan them for years before saying they never fulfilled their potential, are doing the national team a great disservice. Although I support the Australian team more it's a shame to see English football (national team) in the shape it is, particularly given how much money is invested in English football. The whole football world seems to be an inflated market that just wouldn't work in anything other industry. I am hoping Palace's stance on it will become more of a norm than a rarity because it is always a shame to watch football clubs disappear for purely finanacial reasons. Clubs need to be able to self sustain (or at least very close to), not just rely on wealthy owner's money, otherwise, if this GFC gets worse, we could see a lot more clubs perish as owner's resources dry up. Right, that's my moan for the day sorted! ;p

Spurs supporting colleague in work asked me the other day if I had to choose a Prem team to support, who would I choose. Decent guy who loves his football but never goes to games and is too thick to realize what a stupid question he had asked. I just said none of them coz money has ruined it and left it at that.

Great posts on here and totally agree, it's now about getting the right players in who want to PLAY for us n not sit on side lines laughing when we're losing etc. Like johnny Williams attitude a lot where while he might not be an eagle you can sense his deep affection for the club. I only ever want us to go up purely to re develop SP, that's it as *** ***** have ruined football as we knew it. You'll never see palace finish 3rd in top flight again.

Only they can't be any tougher after HMRC lost in Court over the football creditors rule ... My view is that little if anything will change. There is simply too much money being thrown around by people who can readily afford it. The CCC is now really Premier League tier two. |

Would love to see the championship the ceiling for FL clubs with a new cup involving the scots maybe to generate interest. This of course after a one off promotion to get SP looking the nuts and generating money on non match days. A new SP would bring some of our lapsed support back.

Forget sport. To earn what the two cited in the opening post do in one week would take a band 5 registered nurse FOUR YEARS. It's completely detached from the reality for the average fan - no wonder there is no loyalty any more. Oh, and by the way, I blame Sky.
