the non penalty
This deserves its own thread. Have never seen anything like this and still have no idea what happened. If not a penalty why not contest the drop ball? Why not book Murray for diving? Why did the linesman have a better view? What the hell happened?
I have a phone video of the aftermath but not sure whether to post it up yet as I shouted **** over 20 times.

Not a pen imo.
That doesn't answer your other questions though.

From the Holmesdale, I thought it was a penalty.
Not sure how a linesman 40 yards away, had a better view than the ref 10 yards away. |

AS Blind _Eagle, Maz and the reporter on the BBC (said everyone in the press box said they were shocked it was initially given as a Pen) say they do not believe it was a pen, I am going to assume that having initially getting it wrong the ref ended up making the right decision.
So what is the problem? Surely that is what we want refs to do. |

A couple of people around me said it was a "soft penalty" and that he "fell". However I don't think I've ever seen a decision like that reversed before. Surely once the penalty has been given you can't change your mind?

Apparently offside as well !
Beeb. 52:49 The assistant referee flags for offside against Glenn Murray. Chris Kirkland restarts play with the free kick. That might explain why not a drop ball.

Well I thought zaha was fouled it fell to Murray who also went Down wasn't sure which one he gave. Crossbar was in the way for the Murray tackle but when he gave the pen the chance was still on so why not contest the drop ball. They wanted to but the ref wouldn't let them.

Thought the player had won the ball. Said that to my Dad as it was given and he thought the same. Probably the right outcome but went about it in all the wrong way. Guessing he didn't give a drop ball as the players were already so angry with each other that it might have ended up in a massive fight with a lot of scores settled when "going for the ball".

After he had spoken to the linesman, the ref indicated to the players that the defender had got the ball in the tackle. This was my view 'live'. So I think the decision was probably right. However the re-starting of play after a ref's (incorrect) intervention ought to have been a drop ball? I'd be interested in what it says in the rules. It felt to me as though the Wednesday players bullied the ref out of giving a drop ball (perhaps rightly given they were up against a threatening position only because of the ref's cock-up.
The ref lost the plot from then. I was wary of Joniesta coming on but he was great (as always).

Different incident. That's when he missed the open goal. It was definitely a drop ball.

I thought the Ref and Linesman have communication through an earpiece these days.. if so why didn't the lino just say offside no pen in his ear before all that bollox?!

Soft penalty, but the ref cant be bullied into changing his decision. Im sure during my refereeing course I got told that you mustnt reverse a decision. The most bizzare part was how he restarted play though, you cant just give the ball to the keeper to play on, makes no sense to me
at least we won and murray got a second goal though, after that long delay ive got a feeling Garvan would have fluffed it anyway |
