The Ron Noades way
Well we haven't had an RGN discussion for a while so I wonder what people's thoughts are on CPFC2010's (SB) point here :
"1) Buy only young, hungry players from the lower leagues, develop them and sell them when they are a maximum of 26 years old to finance the losses. (the Ron Noades way)." I'm in no way being supportive of Noades and the damage he did to us but you have to admit his transfer policy did work, and we got promoted 3 times whilst still running the club within it's means (and RGN himself syphoning off a fair whack for himself ).Question is, why aren't we following this pretty sound policy instead of signing mostly "experienced" players? Where are all these lower league players?? |

Because all clubs are scouting there, it's a lot harder to find a reasonably priced British young player.

I asked the same question a while ago on another thread, as i too remember fondly the days of bringing in lower league players like GT, Mcgoldrick, Martyn, etc etc etc. However as was rightly pointed out to me on that thread; the money in football has changed the transfer market. Now the majority of lower league players with any promise are snapped up to sit in the reserves of those clubs with money i.e. all the clubs in the premier league and a fair few in the championship under parchute payments. Concentrating on the academy is the only way forward now. |

A second division club has just bought last season's leading 3rd Division striker for £8 million and a non-league player has been signed by another 2nd division club for £1million. A teenager from the 4th division just went straight to Man Utd for about £4m. That would never have happened in Ron's day.
Our academy has to be our best source now, but we will continue to scout the lower leagues and look abroad too.

The "Ron Noades way" didn't stop us signing the likes of Droy and Linighan to steady the ship when we had to. It's all about getting value for money.

Steve genuine question do you really want to go up money aside? Can't see point myself as we'll never achieve 3rd again like we did under uncle Ron(keeping it on thread). Only want us to go up so you guys get abit of your invested money back n it helps redevelope the ground. Of course you have to dream to have motivation but for me sky have ruined football beyond repair.

I'd call it the Steve Coppell way. When Noades interfered we ended up with the likes of Gareth Taylor and Valerian Ismael.

Also you seem to forget that the Noades way stopped us getting the investment we needed to stay in ther Prem. Instead he sold our descnt players we got relegated and had to start all over again.

I seem to recall Ron vetoing a signing than Alan Smith wanted to make for about £400k and the guy was released by the club he was at at the end of the year.
For the life of me I cannot recall the striker, but seem to recall he had blond hair and played for Leicester.

i think its harsh to attack Noades for Ismael. He went on to have a good career. Had he not had that bad injury it could have been very different.
I think that Noades approach mentioned by the OP was right for the time, but you need to bear in mind that it was 20+ years ago and: before we got promoted in '89 our record signing was, I think, Perry Suckling who cost a huge £125k The whole transfer market has changed since RGN made those comments. In those days players couldn't just walk away from a club at the end of their contracts. Clubs were still entitled to hold on to the player's registration and claim a fee for transferring it. |

The player you're thinking of was David Oldfield. Ron was right he wasn't worth £400 let alone £400k The Ron Noades way worked when he and Steve Coppell were building the club in the mid eighties onwards; the 1995 European Court of Justice ruling (Bosman) on footballs retain and transfer system changed all that. After Bosman players could see out their contract and move to a bigger club and the developing club get nothing if the player was over 24. Ron also lost focus on developing Palace in the nineties and was more focused on building his golf course empire. When Southgate moved to Villa thier first offer was £2M plus the little known Dwight Yorke. Ron wanted £2.5M in cash paid to Altonwood which Villa eventually agreed to. Yorke was later sold to Manchester United for £12M pre Bosman and would have shown Ron a nice profit |
