Policing & Stewarding
Good morning
Mixed views about policing last night, from what twitter is saying it was good before the game but not so good after and attempts to segregate fans failed. No complaints about stewarding. What were your experiences? Amanda |

There was a lot of Police after the game. They didn't really seem to have a plan just kept an eye on things and reacted to problems. I prefer this approach from them normally as it means they themselves are not provoking any trouble. I am surprised they did not keep the palace fans back though. There was an incident in the queue for the trains they failed to deal with an a young lad in a palace shirt and scarf was punched and stamped on by a fully grown man. That was pretty depressing to watch but to be honest I don't really think there is much the police could have done to stop it there was 1000s of people there they couldn't have dealt with everyone. They made a mistake in the incident above and arrested a man trying to help the kid I believe but there was no horses nearby so the officers wouldn't have been able to see over the crowds as to what happened.

In general, agree that there didn't seem to be too many problems with stewarding, but there was a lot of confusion after the game, which the police didn't seem to be able to control. One of the police horses seemed to get a bit panicky and we had to take some avoiding action.
There was some verbal abuse flying around which could have led to nasty situations, but in the main, I'd say that most fans, both Palace and Charlton, didn't react to the provocation, so major incident, as far as I was aware, was avoided |

It's always the same at Charlton. Coming out of the ground the police are there in numbers and seemingly in control. As soon as you get to where the fans merge in Floyd Road that control evaporates. There seemed to be a very thin line keeping fans apart at the top near the station and the police were over stretched. No idea what they would have done if the posturing Charlton fans had actually broken through and tried to carry out their threats. Perhaps like me they could see that most of them were just being brave in a gang and behind a police line. Hope the person hit by a bottle is ok.

Always such a nightmare ground to get out of as everyone ends squashed together in one road to the train station.
One of those places where I think luck more than good planning is the only reason why there have been no serious accidents thus far.

We got a police escort from London Bridge to the ground. After getting off the train and seeing the Charlton fans in the pub opposite there was a bit of banter flying about. I got pushed by the old bill twice because i stopped walking and started singing towards the Charlton fans. All in all the Police were ok, a bit heavy handed but understandable with it being a derby etc.
After the game, it was so unorganised. The police didnt seem to know what they were doing and there were a few scuffle on route to the station. I saw the lad who got kicked whilst on the floor. not nice to see. All in all i think the police got it spot on, other than a free for all at the station where there was harldy any about.

Yes it seemed rather odd that they were, sort of, keeping us apart while walking up the hill btu as soon as we got to the main road there was no segregation at all.

Stewarding was top draw. Palace fans left to get on with it, they were relaxed with the standing, smokes, bangers, OTT goal celebrating etc. Stood back and watched the support in amazement in some parts.
Same set up as it always is with Charlton away with regards to the Policing after the game. Charlton on 1 side, Palace on the other side separated by a few Police to begin with, verbals going between the two sets of fans, then the Police lines stop and there was handbags when the fans get mixed. Just run of the mill stuff for a London Derby, especially on a Friday night. The Police horses are unpredictable though! |

Why have riot police and horses keeping fans apart for the first 50 yards or so and then let everyone merge together? It was quite amusing though to see the mouthy fans from both sides shut up once no Police were between them.

Yes, you do get that feeling there. Quite a contrast to how things are organised at the Den where you don't see a single Millwall fan between the ground and the station.

I wasn't allowed in a chicken shop after the game to get some chicken and chips. Very annoying.
One thing, why do so many of the police cover their face with a balaclava like wannabe bank robbers/IRA? What purpose does this serve besides making them look like planks? |

I'd echo what most have said about after the game . The bottleneck can get very lively to say the least . There was a group across the road by the station who were getting quite angry by our presence and started throwing things and pushing over the metal barriers , the funny thing was that after they did this and opened up a point of attack they sort of had second thoughts
. The police did deal with situations swiftly when called upon because it could have turned nasty . Also it was nice to see palace stewards in the ground , who used a lot of common sense for a change |

I personally saw no incidents and thought that whilst the police were visible they were as low key as they could be for such a fixture...stewards seemed to be fine too.
Not sure either could have really been any better so well done to both. (I now await someone coming on with a totally different view, but that's how I saw it) |

Before the match, I guess the police couldn't stop a group of Charlton congregating on the corner but glass bottles being thrown into a open crowd is pathetic and dangerous and glad there was not too much of a reaction from Palace.

I was directed by the Police to the home end after showing my away ticket and asking for directions, that was a fun walk back
![]() The barriers being knocked over was dangerous and people could have got trampled if they had fallen over on them with so many in the street and some of the horses were getting twitchy, handbags in the station queue. Stewards were good, 10 Palace stewards on duty (credit to Steve Browett for that, he asked the Police at the meeting we had about using our own Stewards) left us to it in the ground, Police in Balaclavas WTF!!!

This and throwing a bottle over the line of police just shows how cowardly these guys are. Hope the guy the bottle landed on is okay, police were a little bit slow to react to palace fans asking for an ambulance for the kid. I have a dodgy knee and was treated superbly by stewards last night, let me in gate rather than turnstile and escorted me to a disabled seat to make sure I was okay. Top stewarding. |
