It hurts when a Palace Legend hates me!
This article is in today's Croydon Advertiser, who do we think he is referring to? Mark Bright?
I HAD an awkward incident with a former Palace player this week. Actually it's more than that. He hates me. And he isn't just any former Eagles player, he's one of the best players we ever had. A Palace legend hates me. Let's call him Gary. It all stems from an interview I did with Gary for FYP a couple of years ago where he was really off with me, I put it down to a general dislike of journalists but when I met him face-to-face at the end of season party at Selhurst Park, he blanked me. So, it started a two-year grudge on my part. Childish? Yes. Immature? Yes. And I should have let it go but instead I wrote an article recently where I hinted he wasn't a very good television presenter. Gary tweeted me to show his disapproval of the article, but that was that. Or so I thought. Fast forward to this week and I was kindly invited up to the boardroom after the Forest game to meet a friend who had flown over from Los Angeles. This chap is famous among Eagles fans for having a giant Palace flag in his garden in Hollywood. While all his neighbours fly the stars and stripes he proudly has the red and blue at full mast. Anyway, after catching up I was asked if I'd like to meet a couple of 'Palace legends'. "Damn straight I am", I thought, but as I was led towards the table they were sat, my heart sank. "Oh God, it's him." Gary was with another former Palace player, who played in the same team as him, and was also one of the Eagles' best ever players, who is now representing one of the current team. I shook both their hands, Gary's second, and as I extended my arm I thought 'please don't recognise me' but as he grabbed my hand he took a step back. His eyes narrowed. "Did you write that article?" he asked. In my head all I could hear was 'say no, say no, say no' but what came out of my mouth was "yeah I might have done". Gary instantly withdrew his hand and waved me away. "Nope, goodnight," he said before sitting back down on his chair and playing with his phone, with the air of a child who had just been told off. I was left awkwardly standing there with the other former Palace player who was perfectly friendly and we made small talk for a few minutes before I excused myself. I feel bad because I want Gary to like me, hell I want everyone to like me, and I think he's one of the greatest Palace players ever, but it seems the chances of he and I being friends any time soon are slim. |

A good companion piece to the "Michael Chopra" thread in the "World of Football" forum.

I thought Ian Wright myself, Do not see the point in the story though, In a week when we played some of the best football in a long time, this plank still come's up with something negative to right about, Who cares about his personal childish spat with an explayer, get over it. Cringworthy writing.

Haha I got the train home with JD after the Forest match and this article basically follows the conversation we had. I'll leave it to him to reveal who the player is.

Bright tweeted that he was in the boardroom for the forest game.

So the other legend must be Andy Gray?
And TV narrows it to Wright, Bright and Salad, I think But Wright is the only one who has ever 'presented' anything

I just had a look at the Adder. An article by James Daly of FYP fame and although I don't know him well, a nicer chap you couldn't hope to meet - a real Palace fanatic, very articulate and intelligent.
He obviously found out the hard way that you can't please all the people all the time. Nobody likes to be criticised in print, least of all players. James probably felt he was making a fairly innocuous comment which 'Gary' took exception to - it happens.

Gary O'Reilly does punditry, but not exactly a legend, and I guess "Gary" wouldn't be much of a pseudonym for him

Nobby will be the flag bearer in Hollywood (wonder if he brings Christopher Guest to games with him) and Brighty the player.

Anyone knocking around with sports people knows that they can be prima donnas at times, and don't like criticism from pro journos let alone bloggers/fanzines so JD was on a bit of a hiding to nothing.
The second player is obviously Gray so that suggests Wright (who is a dreadful presenter anyway!) or Bright who started a bit wooden a couple of years back but has now settled into a decent pundit and TV sports reporter for BBC London. The incident sounds more in character for Wright than Bright but who knows. However, choosing to put it all in print AGAIN, and also in a general good news week for Palace, sounds rather childish and petulant on JD's behalf.

Is anyone really surprised? Its the Croydon Advertiser. Too busy focusing on the negatives and the fcuking cheerleaders than what is actually happening on the pitch. In the last 12 months we have seen from the Adder: The disgraceful coverage of the Palace fan who ended up in court. Courtesy of that silly Arsenal 'rose lover" bint. The editor fishing around on twitter to Moxey missus trying to create a shitstorm about twitter abuse, which was never confirmed as coming from a CP fan. Deciding to reduce the actual number of articles around CP and instead have half a page on what people have "tweeted" that week. "Going down Selhurst today, come on #palace LOL" etc The Advertiser printing a story about *****na tours at Selhurst, seemingly thinking this was one big laugh. I"m sure I've missed some as well. The Advertiser should be the number one source in the local print media for Palace coverage. Instead its more concerned about highlighting the negatives week in week out.

Brighty called it right with that JD bloke. He should have slapped him as well. Daly’s voice is really annoying. He’s like the posh kid that would get beats in the playground & then go and grass you up to the teachers. My stomach turns when I listen to him speak, which is often, as it is a necessary suffering for when I lend my ear to the golden nectar that is AndyStreet. Oh Andy, you beautiful being. My heart yearns for you always.

Just come out with the name! We all expect Ian Wright to be the sensitive yiy and I would be disappointed in Bright or Johnny Salad Cream holding a grudge.
