West Sussex
Morning all,
We have been looking at moving away from South London for some time and an area we are seriously considering is West Sussex. Any advice on particular town/villages worth looking at would be appreciated. We have two children under five so good schools are a must. We also plan to settle long term so looking ahead, a location close to a larger town would be useful so that there is more for the kids to do as they get older. We do not need to commute to central london so speedy trains not necessary. We still plan to watch palace regularly, so a fast route to the ground be it by car or train is necessary. Cheers |

East Grinstead has good schools, not too far from London, The Coast and countryside. Most of it has nice housing, there are a few not so nice places but not much crime. Moved there from South London 12 years ago, primary schools really good as well as secondary schools. Train goes into Croydon so easily able to get to Palace matches and car journey not too bad either as I used to drive to matches but now find the train easier

Very expensive area, especially around Midhurst! Though it is really nice down there, my little sis lives in Selsey which is like Croydon by the sea in summer time!!!

Have a look at Horsham - it ended up 2nd as best place on Location poll a few years back. Good transport links to London, Gatwick, Guildford, The 'Coast'..... very nice balance between calm standard of life with everything within easy reach. Old market town, but now quite buzzing with decent investment and independent shops, cafes, restaurants & bars etc
Very much family orientated, good schools, beautiful villages just outside of town, only down point is the local weeds (all coming back out of the closet......). Been here most of my life when family all headed south from S.London. Commute to town daily with hundreds of others so it's defintieky becoming more popular (upkeep in house prices) and there's plenty of new (decent) housing. Under an hour door to door on the train to Palace on a Saturday ![]() If you're thinking bout W.Sussex then you have to have a look!!! |

If you're looking at Crawley you need to be very selective about which bit! Some nice enough places around it (Copthorne, Crawley Down, Turners Hill etc) - we'd love to be able to move out of Crawley itself a bit, but cost is very much an issue

Crawley is a crap hole and has been for 25 years. You may as well move to Croydon.
East Grinstead lived there most my life before. The schools are good and lovely green spaces and surrounded by more beautiful countryside, but the town centre has just gone downhill. The nimbys blocked every company that wanted to move to the town which stopped other companies working there. It's all mobile phone shops, charity shops , bookies, estate agents and empty shops and just a hanging out place for bored chavvy kids who go to the mobile phone shops. There is very little nightlife. Pubs are not very good and the one or two clubs that are open when open; Base and Martines or whatever they are called now are worse. A few good curry houses and chineses, but apart from that well erm. Parking in the town on a saturday isn't worth the hassle. Just walk. After the eighties the amount of housing became too much for the town centre really and the town just started going backwards and downhill. As said NIMBYS blocked everything that would have helped that and given the kids something to do. Thankfully the trains have improved because they used to be bloody awful. Just abount the last line to get rid of slam door coaches. Unless it's changed the last train back form London or Croydon is something like 11 and this is the only line. Nothing east , south or west so if you want to go somewhere with nightlife be prepared to drive. To sum up: The town lacks facilities or decent nightlife is a massive way. Public transport links are poor. Housing good as long as you have 250-350k minimum to spend. Lower than that and you may get some undesirable neighbours and might struggle to park. Don't live around stone quarry or copyhold (I've forgotten what it's called). Ok I'm not quite summing up. Crawley Down don't bother with. And in Turners Hill years of inbreeding are noticable. Horsham isn't a bad shout. You kids can get the train when they are teenagers and go to things so they won't hate you like they will if you move to East Grinstead.

I live in Haywards Heath which is a really good location transport wise. It can be an expensive area but does have a lot of good schools locally. If you prefer village life to town life 5 minutes from Haywards Heath is lindfield which is very tranquil.

be careful of a very over priced town that has a newly established football club ( 2010-2011 season). It's at the bottom (no pun intended) of the M23, can't remember the name tho.

I live in Burgess Hill. 40min to Croydon on train, under an hour into central London, and not to expensive. Haywards Heath is good also but you get nothing for your money.

I walked the Vanguard way recently and discovered a really nice village in East Sussex called High Hurstwood. I think that's what it was called. Would be very expensive, though, judging by the price of the menu at the local pub. Definately the nicest place I came across, better than Edenbridge, Forest Row and Berwick.

Went through the same thing a few years ago and settled on Horsham. Couldn't be happier with the choice, nice area and don't think we could find a better school for the 6-year-old (who was 3 when we moved) without paying fees. Plenty of trains and easy to get to London by car. Reasonable selection of shops in town and Crawley 20 minutes away for anything that we don't have.
Only regret is we didn't move out of London earlier. |
