Trial Winner for Northern Meteor

The first two year-old barrier trials were held at Randwick on Monday morning with three heats for the new season babies over 740 metres and a winner for boom first season sire Northern Meteor, plus an impressive first showing for the top priced filly from the 2012 Magic Millions Yearling Sale.

The Gai Waterhouse trained Northern Meteor colt Mr Jackman (pictured as a yearling) looked a ready-made racehorse, jumping brilliantly and railing through to lead before fighting off a challenge from Ideal Guide to win by half a length with six lengths back to the third horse.

They clocked 43.8 for the trip with the winner finding the line in style to clock the quickest time of the three heats.

Purchased by Star Thoroughbreds for $80,000 from the Carramar Park draft at Magic Millions, Mr Jackman is certainly a well named youngster given his dam is stakes-placed Miss Broadway, who is by General Nediym.

Clocker taken by one at Monday's two-year-old trials

Randwick clocker Craig Tompson says the most impressive two-year-old trial at Warwick Farm on Monday wasn't from one of the 11 winners. Tompson was taken with the performance of the Gai Waterhouse-trained Whittington in heat one of the morning.

Tompson said the performance of Whittington's stablemates, War and Mr Jackman in heat five should put the duo in good stead ahead of their debuts. War had half-a-length to spare over Mr Jackman on the line and Tompson said both gallopers had a bright future. "War's got plenty of class and Mr Jackman has definitely improved off his first trial and is a quality colt by Northern Meteor," he said.

A new generation of two-year-olds will step out at Randwick on Saturday 6 October with the running of the time-honoured Breeders' Plate and Gimcrack Stakes. The first juvenile races of the season in Sydney, the Breeders' Plate (1000m) for colts and geldings and the Gimcrack (1000m) for fillies have traditionally been sound guides to the Golden Slipper.

Waterhouse will have several runners in the early two-year-old races. Trial winners Sugar Rush and Shahad should go to the Gimcrack Stakes, as will John Singleton-owned pair Most Joyful and Sammy's Girl, which both ran second in their first appearances. ''Most Joyful and Sugar Rush are very professional, while the other two - Shahad and Sammy's Girl - are ready to go to the races as well,'' Waterhouse said.

She declared colts War and Mr Jackman would quinella the Breeders Plate after they were one-two in the fifth heat of the day.

Over 235 clips of breeze ups held around the country in the lead up to the Magic Millions National Horses in Training Sale are now online.

Recent breeze up sessions at the Gold Coast in Queensland, Seymour in Victoria and Warwick Farm in New South Wales have all been collated and can be viewed via the Magic Millions website.

A fourth and final breeze up session will be held on the eve of the sale at the Gold Coast on October 29. The sale will be held on October 31 and November 1.

From the draft of Attunga Stud, the colt, catalogued as lot 33, is a half brother to the Adelaide based stakes performer Shadrach. His dam Autumn Belle won four races in Adelaide before being retired to stud where she has produced three city performers from just five runners. A colt by former top class Magic Millions graduate Magic Albert edged out a colt by first season sire Ready's Image to be the quickest breeze up lot at Seymour on September 19. Lot 92, the Magic Albert colt is the second foal of the twice winning Danske mare Dance Maiden and he is a member of a quality Nolen Racing draft. The Magic Albert colt breezed up 10.28 - just one hundredth of a second ahead of the Ready's Image colt, lot 333. A member of the Laceby Lodge Stud draft, the Ready's Image colt is a half brother to multiple winner Stratum Force and hails from a Group One family. Overall 87 lots breezed at Seymour at an average time of 11 seconds in a great exhibition of galloping.

The day's quickest breeze, lot 164 by Mossman is a half brother brother to the good class stakes winner My Middi from Baramul Stud's draft. Lot 177, the colt by Bel Danoro, is the first foal of an unraced three quarter sister to Email Me, the dam of Latin News and from the family of Golden Slipper winning sire Marauding. A colt by Testa Rossa (11.01), a filly by Dane Shadow (11.06) and another colt by Testa Rossa (11.10) also impressed with quick times.

Horse Progress:
I have taken several days to make up my mind whether Mr Jackman would run on Saturday in the Breeders Plate or go to the paddock. Senior rider Steve O'Halloran said this morning the colt was changing strides and his action is not 100%. This is a very good colt. He will win many races but at present he is not ready. He has shown good ability at both his trials. He will spell for the next 4-6 weeks and he will have a ball in the autumn.
