The Beatles and Palace 50 years on
As the TV and media in general are full of features about the 50th anniversary of their first chart release. I thought it would be interesting to rewind 50 years in Palace history to see what was going on at Selhurst Park and bring back memorys for some of us long suffering fans.
This was the chart of 13th October 1962, a good few of them have become classics and I recall many being played over the PA system at Selhurst. http://chartarchive.org/c/singles/1962-10-13 I was aware of the Beatles around this time, but of course few of us could have imagined what was to come over the next 8 or so years. I think that includes Palace finally arriving in Division 1 On October 13th 1962 Palace recorded a 2-1 victory over Colchester at Layer Rd, never an easy place to go. It was our first win after four straight defeats. We were enjoying our second season back in Division three which saw us finish 11th and go onto promotion back to Division 2 after 40 years the next season. Arthur Rowe was about to step down as manager due to illness and Dick Graham took over and he was to mastermind promotion 18 months later. Arthur was to come back as caretaker manager when Dick was sacked ahead of Bert Heads appointment in 1966. The Palace squad was full of legends Glazier, Holton, Long, Stephenson, Petchey, Imlach, Rouse, Allen, Howe and McNicholl ![]()

Brings back some good memories. Of course, shortly afterwards in 1964 was when 'Glad All Over' was adopted, even though the Dave Clark 5 were a North London group.

How can you compare us with a moody boy band? At least Bond started 50 years ago.

What ever your thoughts about the Beatles, they were along with other legendary groups from that time the sound track to the rise of Palace up the football league. For many of us from that Palace generation their songs have association with a wealth of great memories. So many records John Henty played on the PA in those years are still played on the radio today, of course "Glad all Over" is the most associated with Palace, but there are a lot of others that John would play on a regular basis. I became a Beatles fan way back then and are still to this day, along with other 60's singers and groups like the Who, Small Faces, Kinks and others. They all have songs that I can associate with Palace in the 60's

Blimey I forgot that China had invaded India. "Telstar" was in the charts after its launch in July that year, which of course has Palace connections. Beyond the Fringe opened

The Beatles and Palace: the two things that have touched me most in my life.
I do envy those of you who lived through the 60's. To have been able to experience hearing a fresh and new Beatle single/album must've been unbelievable. And if that wasn't intoxicating enough you also had the likes of Dylan, Stones, Kinks.....knocking out albums too. There was certainly something creatively potent in the air around that time. What happened? Out of interest - 32 years ago today ![]()

The voice of John Henty over the loudspeakers, heard from streets away when my dad used to park up. I threw up when I heard him over the speakers at Brighton some years later playing Sussex by the Sea. |

I was always a Kinks fan, but I seem to recall John Henty playing 'Needles and Pins' by the Searchers in those days.
