That is awful news. A truly amazing guitar player and a genius. Brilliant in Dr Feelgood and still puts on a fantastic show with Norman Watt-Roy on bass. Was also the star of the Oil City documentary.

Hope I get to see him one more time.

Great guitarist, shows you don't have to make it squeal. Will be missed.

Gutted, great live performer!
I can only echo what what other people have posted, what a life he must have had!

One thing that sticks out is his intro at the beginning of Ian Dury's I wanna be straight!

His current live trio, with Watt-Roy and Dylan Howe (Steve Howe's son) is truly fabulous. If you haven't seen them, do.

Oil City Confidential is, in my opinion, Julien Temple's finest moment. A truly great British music film.

Wilko is a national treasure. A really original guitar player, a man who rarely compromises, and a splendid 20th century commentator. The Feelgood's pointed the way for punk, for which I am forever grateful.

Can only echo what others have said Feelgood were just something else back in the day and Wilko the absolute nuts! Not sure I could actually handle a farewell show though, I mean it really is going to be farewell isn't it?

And if anyone hasn't seen it grab a copy of the aforementioned Oil City Confidential, simply brilliant!

Sad news, had the pleasure of seeing him with Feelgood at Guildford Civic Hall and again with his own band a couple of years later. Top performer, a one off.

All the very best to Wilko - Feelgood were the nuts, and never the same without him.

Maybe the good Doctor will bring Wilko an elixir to help him in his medical mire, perhaps even made of equal measures of ...milk and alcohol.

For those too young to appreciate real live music played in living-room sized auditoriums for the price of a couple of pints of beer, not a couple of mortgage instalments on a Barratts Shoe-box Home, the good Doctor was THE Voice of great excitement, raw energy and pure musical throbbing ooomph in the Disco-dominated 1970s.

They weren't no precursor to punk - they were head and shoulders above that scrotty little worthless rebellion.

Long live Wilko and may the vibes be with you.

I saw Wilko Johnson and The Solid Senders play at a CND Festival at Crystal Palace Bowl in the park and also saw the brilliant Dr Feelgood a few times including a gig at the Croydon Underground Club.

Wilko has a unique guitar style which is easily recognisable and his music is very popular.

Some of the best and liveliest gigs that I have ever been to are those involving Wilko and his rocking R & B.

Wilko based his guitar style on Mick Green of The Pirates, another great player taken from us by cancer.

Sorry, but you're just wrong.
You have to remember the context. In 1975/76, the music scene was horrible. Bands so remote from the fans that they might as well have been on Mars, expensive and overblown stage shows, and stupid ticket prices.
Bands like the Feelgoods brought music back to smaller venues, singing about things people could relate to, and recognised their audience as fellow human beings. They were one of the few bands, those of us looking for something new, had any respect for.

Oh, I'm so sorry, I'm so wrong...because you say so- what an over-opinionated, self-important cretin.

Don't be crass and show yourself up on a tribute, good wishes thread like this - even if you are desperate to masturbate publicly your views about mid-1970s pop music and how estranged you felt in your bedroom at the time.

Long live Wilko, and naturally, as far as I am concerned as a Feelgood fan who saw them live several times, he was very much part of the Feelgood magic and they were at their best when he was with them.

I couldn't be more respectful to Wilko and the Feelgoods - saw them many times, and they were true originals. I just pointed out what they meant to my generation, and the context. No need for you to go off on one and rant into your chip paper....
As for 'over-opinionated, self-important cretin' - take a look at your own comment about 'that scrotty little worthless rebellion.'

This quote might interest you:

'“Our energy was our legacy to the punks. It was the violence of our act, and the mean look, which got to them. They didn’t have the knowledge or the technique, but they had the attitude.”

Now, who do you think might have said that?

You just need to see Wilko's attitude on stage to get an idea of what punk might have taken from him, and the band. He's got a proto-punk snarl, and a great f u attitude.
