We played wonderful stuff at the start if the season. I don't know if it was Smith who changed the style of play or if other teams found us out, but we went a bit route one for the second half of the season. So whilst everyone rightly points out the significance of the Stewart transfer, to me it reminds me of a more result based, less enjoyable stage of the season.

I feel that if we didn't have Armstrong upfront, we wouldn't have been anywhere near promotion. He destroyed teams in that division on his day.

That's sort of how it seemed to me from over here.

It was at a pretty low point in my Palace supporting life, and found it pretty hard to get too excited. It all seemed rather ho hum.

Mind you it, was pre main stream internet, and I was stuck with the BBC World Service and week old newspaper reports to keep up with things.

Cracking season ! Armstrong was excellent and we played some wonderful stuff especially in the first half of the season. I remember us being top of the league at Christmas and staying there. I was at Boro away when we clinched the title and remember getting back to Kings Cross train station and seeing all the players getting onto the coach, singing 'Palace are back' ! Happy days.

I agree that it was one of the strongest squads ever in the second tier. A great mamager would have taken teh leagues points record but Alan Smith just about got us the title.

There have been very few other occasions when a team has come down so strong and kept the majority of them together.

Which was more than made up for in the first game of the next season as we get horribly spanked by Liverpool, new signing Ray Wilkins fvcks off badly injured and the Holmesdale's a bleeding building site.

The only notable departures from memory were McGoldrick & Thomas, and GT had been a shadow of himself in his last season with niggling injuries/talk of transfers & the sad passing of his father.
Martyn played in a few summer friendlies for England, but still opted to stay. Love the man! Smith really did have a good job to walk into

Normal service was resumed straight away, that much is a definite but as a season, well 1993-94 it does seem to be almost the 'lost' one when it comes to reflecting back on the good and the bad.

Like somehow we have tried to erase it from our collective memories for a whole host of reasons, not least the rather dubious tendency in the majority of us to support Palace for the drama of it all, rather than actually wanting a team who win things with seeming ease. Somehow it just aint right.

Also the last game at Ayrsome Park, we closed it in style just like we did in the last game at Plough Lane We had a private coach to mboro that day remember hearing about Senna's death on the way back. Stopped off at some pub on the way back near Nottingham and remember drinking huge amounts of beer!

Highlights for me

Armstrong hat trick and Southgate goal from the car park v Pompey

Brum away with a great passing goal stroked home by Richard shaw

Watford away on a freezing afternoon. Sat next to Joyce the voice

Jolly with late goal v Southend just post Xmas

Boro away. Boro fans applauded us at end of game then bayed for blood of their manager

Loved Brum away Oxford away Pompey And Stoke at home to name but a few, but a game that illustrated the spirit of the team was Peterborough at home when we won 3-2 after being 2 down. The team always thought they could win it or so it seemed to me. Rare Richard Shaw goal in that game if memory serves me right.

Think 4 played in the Cup Finals of 1990 and 5 or possibly 6 were regulars in our 3rd place finish in 1991, just 3 years earlier.

It would be like half the Man City side of 3 years ago playing in the Championship this season!

I remember standing on the Holmesdale and a mate telling me he'd died and I just wouldn't believe it. Tried to check the BBC website but it was yet to be invented.

Maybe Cobain and Senna had to die for us to have a stress-free season.

We won it by 7 points so hardly that close. I will always be disappointed we didn't show up for the last game of the season vs Watford.
