That or he has the same clothes on.

Having said that, the eye witness accounts sound bad. Very sad.
They are old pictures, the story in The Mail make that fairly clear.

I would suggest an AA Sponsor and 12 Step programme.

The alcohol is a symptom of a deeper problem - in the article he says he can't cope with his thoughts - which points possibly to a trauma somewhere, probably in his childhood. He may well have un-diagnosed PTSD. Heavy abuse of alcohol is often termed 'self-medication' the point in which the alcohol sedates the thoughts and proves to be a temporary escape from the torment.

The US Veterans association has a really good web site on the issue.

To view the link you have to Register or Login
PTSD and alcohol use problems are often found together. This pairing can be big trouble for the trauma survivor and his or her family.

People with PTSD are more likely than others with the same sort of background to have drinking problems. By the same token, people with drinking problems often have PTSD. Those with PTSD have more problems with alcohol both before and after getting PTSD. Having PTSD increases the risk that you will develop a drinking problem.

Up to three quarters of those who have survived abusive or violent trauma report drinking problems. Up to a third of those who survive traumatic accidents, illness, or disasters report drinking problems. Alcohol problems are more common for survivors who have ongoing health problems or pain.

Alcohol use problems often lead to trauma and problems in relationships. If you have a drinking problem, you are more likely than others with your same sort of background to go through a psychological trauma. You may also have problems getting close to others. You may have more conflicts with those people to whom you are close.

Problems with alcohol are linked to a confused and disorderly life. This kind of life leads to less closeness and more conflict within a family. The confusion of a life with a drinking problem makes it harder to be a good parent.

Kenny has massively low self esteem and I'm sure that doesn't help in getting himself out of this spiral. He's been doing incredibly well, I'm with him most match days and he's been strong and confident. In his situation, I'm sure it doesn't take much to slip back. Bless his heart.

It's such a shame Jane. Let's hope he can quickly overcome this setback.

OK - thanks Pete, I didn't have access to the Mail article, just the photos.

Still pretty shitty digging them out again though.

He was my first Palace hero to leave the club. Still remember at 7, the feeling of utter betrayal and disgust seeing him in that Arsenal kit. . He became the first of many...

On his appearance on the JK show: I don't see how humiliating yourself on national TV actually helps your rock bottom self esteem. Surely if that Kyle creature really did have Kenny's best interests at heart, he would've organised all that rehab persuasion in private. But I guess that's not how 'the business' works.

Really hard to watch someone who you once perceived as a 'God', look so broken. Have to say though; for someone who has abused their body for so long - he doesn't look too shabby for a 57 year old.

Just hope he can live out the rest of his days in some sort of mental peace.

You are so seriously out of touch with anything , he has been a club ambassador for years . Has anyone seen him with a drink in his hand at Palace ? I would imagine the huge number of people all looking at him , all looking to see if he is drinking when at these type of events would make it a lot harder for him to have a drink . It would be far easier to crack open a tin at home .

Hopefully now is the time our club once again demonstrates it's class by standing by him.
Always proud that it was our club that gave him an opportunity when it seemed others hadn't.

So now's the time we support our Kenny.

Let's start with a prolonged "One Kenny Sansom" - or "He's one of our own" on 3 minutes this Saturday!!!

There are lots of people at Palace who are helping Kenny to deal with this. The club won't abandon him.

Sadly Kenny has gone on binges while working with both us and Arsenal and both clubs continue to try and help him. It should not have been the norm for a club to encourage drinking, Arsenal for some insane reason did. It is well known he has been an ambassador for both clubs, you seem to have a problem??

So you are saying Kenny Sansom had gone a drinking binge whilst being employed by Crystal Palace on a matchday ? Seriously statement to make !

He could be the Fraizer Campbell of recovery. He might need 30 chances before he takes one. On a serious note you can't give up on him just because the media mug him off every time he makes a mistake. Most alcoholics have a relapse and no one barring a few family members know. I'm not saying he will sort himself out but he definitely still needs support whatever path he takes.

I think you'd better just leave it, mate. Whatever has happened in the past has been dealt with between Kenny and the club and is water under the bridge. It is obvious that the club continue to support Kenny through a difficult time, while balancing the potential pitfalls of employing someone on match days who is dealing with issues like this. I think they should be applauded for that, and that we leave the details between the club and KS.
