This is probably the developer's opening gambit, and massively taking the pi55.
(I haven't looked at any of the case information, except what is on the BBS)

If the Planning Committee have already said they are in favour, then one can only assume they are incompetent, or brown envelopes have been delivered.

From a Planning perspective, this seems like a massive over-development of the site. Has provision been made for car parking ? or do they expect that none of the residents will want a car ?

If enough objections are received (and this is where people need to be vocal and active),..perhaps on the grounds of :
1. Over development
2. Not in keeping with the locale
etc, etc...
3) Strain on commuter services /roads
Then the plans may be revised down slightly, until approval can be gained.

Unfortunately, it's the way of the world. How long before it turns into a massive ghetto ? Noise blaring out from all hours, washing hanging from the balconies and the faint aroma of marijuana drifting from a few open windows.
Still, lovely views of the big junction on the A23, with all the noise and pollution that goes with it.

Large erection, indeed

We went to Margate the other week, the view of the town is totally ruined by an ugly concrete block of flats that stick out like a sore thumb. Being an ex Coulsdon boy you have my full support.

It appears that they are planning: "public realm improvements with associated vehicular accesses" ie knocking more stuff down to build car parks for the block

Embrace change.

I remember going to the shops along there when I was a kid. Purley was a lovely town in those days but then Sainsbury's closed, they built the new one in the High Street and the old site along with Russell Hill Road has been shite for nigh on 40 years - compounded by building the huge Tesco on the old ESWC site.

That new tower could be the beginning of a Purley renaissance - it can't be any worse than it has been.

Purley really could get a lot worse than it is now, traffic, pollution and visually to name but a few, granted it could do with a tidy-up.

Surely the Baptist Church, who are proposing this, should be using this land with more benevolent motives. A community centre would be a good start, not a whacking-great eye-sore.

Haven't they submitted planning permission for that site before?

Why are the council doing this? There's tons of space to build on, all along the length of the Limpsfield Road at Sanderstead to Hamsey Green, and down to the Godstone Road. It's just begging to be built on and developed.

Errm... do you know the site we're talking about?

It's in Purley. And it's derelict. And it's not the council doing anything other than granting permission for the development.

Unless you're taking the piss, which should be applauded.

As I understand it, that's not true. The Baptist Church wanted to build a smaller building, but the Council's target for affordable housing meant they had to build it much higher in order for it to be financially viable for the developers

If the architecture is right, the height really isn't an issue for that site.

I can't see why it would piss people off as that whole area has been an eyesore for 40 odd years.

I hear the penthouse is going to be sold off really cheaply.
It has a panoramic view of Purley, Coulsdon and Croydon.
You've got to compensate for that.

It will be a great view - if the angles are right the owner may even get to view Wilf's back garden.

It's been a low-rise eyesore, visible only when you're next to it: if you build a tall eyesore there's no escaping it for miles around (q.v. Saffron Square).

I don't think you can compare a church/paved area to a 17 storey building. That height is completely out of character for the area.

As has already been said Purley cross is a bottle neck and gets congested enough, this will only make traffic and parking worse.

Save Purley? Its a roundabout/one way system with a few manky shops. There's nothing to save.

This sounds like some much needed investment and modernisation that can only improve the area, especially if it prompts other such building. A few such buildings and the people they bring may give it back some vibrancy and put it on the map. All Purley is now in most people's minds is a traffic jam.

You're completely missing the point, it's not new building that is the problem, it's the fact that it's seventeen storeys high! Surely adding this many properties right in the centre will only make the traffic even worse.

As for other comments about 'embracing change', I've got no problem with some change, but it seems like nothing these days is built to make an area nice, this for example is purely to maximise profit and line some someones pocket who probably doesn't live near by. Why encourage that?

A smaller development would be ok.

I fully agree. Given the general wealth of the immediate surroundings, Purley should be packed full of high end restaurants and shops but Croydon council merely see the south of the borough in terms of the money it brings in and has allowed it to deteriorate into the sorry condition it is now, with Coulsdon also being dragged into this as well. (recent examples in Coulsdon specifically are hitting the local cafes with an extra sunshine tax on the space that some of them utilise for tables outside and getting rid of the hours free parking)

Anything that brings more people into the locale has to be seen as a positive.
