If Labour need to get back its socially conservative traditional working class vote, then this is not the way to do it no matter how much you want to virtue signal about how right on and trendy you are.

In fact, just the ludicrous fact that she is up in the frame to stand for Prime Minister tells you how far out of touch the entire Labour party really is from the reality on the ground.
Always find a way to lower the tone.

For me her lesbianism is a plus, and I have absolutely no problem with her sexual preferences. However, I shall not be voting for her, and would rather keep Corbyn.

Whereas if it's Leadsom vs Corbyn, I think all bets are off and new centrist party emerging as a split from others could do quite well.

That's just offensive. I don't think eagle would be that great, but PLP are looking at who could win a vote of the membership rather than who can beat the Tories.

Sexuality is irrelevant.

I'm still clinging to the assumption that Eagle is just a stalking horse. She came fourth in the deputy leadership election in 2015 - they surely can't believe she could win.

I think he seems decent, from what I've seen of him. I suspect there will be more names in the frame though.

You are right about my post being offensive. And I should apologise for that. But sexuality is not irrelevant and if anybody is genuinely wanting the Labour party to survive (and that is what is at stake here, forget actually winning any elections) then who leads them is of crucial importance and this woman is simply not going to cut the mustard for a variety of reasons. And beating the Tories is what this is ultimately all about.

In this London/SE metropolitan bubble then maybe sexuality does not matter (although they still make hell a lot of noise about it) but then again, remaining in the EU seems to be default position and we have all seen how well that has worked out.

Her challenge has to be seen as nothing more than an attempt to hammer home to Corbyn how serious this lack of confidence in him is because I see nothing in her to suggest that if she were to take over, that it would help Labour what so ever.

Benn, Kendall, Hunt, Umuna. I'm sure they all thought about it and decided that unless Corbyn resigned they wouldn't stand, lest they be humiliated again with 4% of the vote

Well quite. They know they cannot beat him in a straight forward vote so their only chance is to make him leave of his own accord.

She is, I think the scenario has two plays. If Corbyn is not on the ballot others come in, if he is, she tries to win as the compromise candidate and then stands down should she win once wounds are healed.

If Corbyn wins, the party splits for sure.

When you talk about 'splits' you have to be very careful. Many of those on the right of the party are in deep red areas If they were to form a new anti-Labour party, the Labour candidate would win. I'm sure there are some leafy parts of London and Birmingham where they world split the vote, but mostly it would be a wipe out, not a SDP re-birth. Expect 15 to defect, max.

You are underestimating two things. Firstly, the depth of dislike of Corbyn and his kitchen cabinet and their modus operandi within the PLP, and secondly the distance in policy terms and left wing Islington-itis between Corbyn and those deep red areas you talk about who are actually heading in UKIPs direction rapidly.

Frank Field is as right-wing as they come, and yet he's been MP for Birkenhead since 1979. If the party splits then I can't see him losing to an inexperienced Corbyn candidate. If an MP is long-standing and perceived to be doing a good job, people will vote for them even if they don't support the party.

It's happened to the left before, see. Dave Nellis in 1997. About time the right of the party start practising the unity they preach. Or be de-selected, or if they so chose, split. Everyone is fed up hearing their moaning.

I'm not convinced Stoke and Sheffield are particularly fired up by anti-west student Trotskyist candidates either to be honest.

Which is why Labour are doing so shit in the polls. Labour under Corbyn are already looking to gift the Tories the next election. If they split, same outcome, so what difference does it make?

Without a new leader to unify the party (which Corbyn will now never do), Labour are screwed.

It's fascinating to watch at least.
