Black Cab Or Uber

Was sent an email today from Uber stating that new proposed legislation will mean that people HAVE to wait 5 mins for a car.

To view the link you have to Register or Login

It appears that the legislation has been proposed purely to give back the black cab drivers their monopoly.

So question is.... do you guys Uber or Black cab for your London (and other city) transport needs?

Previously used to get a black cab from the train station most nights, uber is 50% cheaper and no need to carry cash.

Use black cabs for work. Uber for non work. Not sure why I make this distinction but there you are.

Is there an Uber website? Don't have space for the app on my phone so probably won't be using them.

Local mini cab firm for local journeys. For local folk. After a while, you know the drivers and any cabs that should be scrapped.

Uber for all other casual journeys. Again, black cabs for work and stations. Habits I guess.

you'd think. But I don't get the cheap uber cars. I get the middle ones, which are about the same price as a black cab.

As do I.

I do miss PK on here, and this subject would add further fuel to his fire that the world is against him.

Uber all the way but black cabs in the evenings when they surcharge and they are hard to find.

I posted this on FB. I think its a disgrace that we can even be talking about Uber dumbing down their service to provide a more level playing field for Black Cabs. Ordinary Londoners don't use Black cabs as has been borne out by this poll so far. They are mainly used by business people (claiming on expenses) and tourists mainly because they are ridiculously expensive. Uber provide a far better service at a fraction of the cost. How can it be good for consumers to try and suppress innovation like this, just to suit their competitors. We live in a fast moving world and businesses that can't evolve quickly become irrelevant. Just because Black Cabs are an iconic London symbol, shouldn't mean they should be protected at the expense of the general public.

All the cabbies want is a level playing field, not job protection, which is fair enough.

Why should they be required by law to have different and more costly standards to their competition?

These days I probably only visit central London about half a dozen times a year so I'm not really qualified to comment. However when I do, i just walk out of Waterloo station, get straight into a black cab and am dropped off in Brook Street shortly after. No wait whatsoever and, what with all the building work going on, the "knowledge" ensures that I sill get there on time despite the congestion.

For me I simply cannot see why I'd chose an alternative.

i guess Kev would class me as a tourist these days.

And if an app was developed that resulted in a competitor offering to do your job "at a fraction of the cost" would you be so keen to promote it?

We currently have two classes of cabs... Taxis and mini-cabs. Can't be hard for Uber to operate according to the laws and regulations for one or the other service.

Uber, for all it pretends to be a hip tech company, is a taxi company owned by the likes of Goldman Sachs
