Lewisham should have tried to help the club rather than a private company. I don't care if its Millwall its local government does far too little to protect football clubs which are important local institutions.

They need to downsize, not expand.

It means that the developers (also known for not paying taxes in the UK) getting land (belonging to Millwall and local people) cheaply.

Trebles all round for the developers and their chums on Lewisham Council.

Big business far more important than local culture, heritage and its people. There was a day when this would never have been possible. Nowadays for a locale to prosper it appears it has to give up its identity to do so.

Capitalism gone bad.

I haven't been following this closely but my recollection was that Millwall were also after the land for less than its market value with the resulting proceeds of housing/commercial development plugging the gaps in their balance sheet. That seems to be the inference of their quoted statement anyway.

Apologies if I've got the wrong end of the stuck but is there anywhere more reliable than The Standard to compare what the two bids mean financially for a council who must be struggling to preserve a range if vital services.

As football fans we have a natural presumption that a local council should support our needs and I imagine Lewisham Council did so for Millwall when they moved to the New Den but there is a bigger picture here I suspect.

Apartments facing away from the ground will command a higher price, apparently.

Genuine question. When Millwall moved from Cold Blow Lane which got redeveloped for housing, how much did they sell the land for? How much did they spend to build the New Den, which has always looked like a cheap construction made of breeze blocks to me? Slightly off topic but just wondered.

I don't think this is a new issue for London clubs. In the past Charlton and Wimbledon have had the same issues. There is so much demand for housing that improving or building a new ground for a London club is a massive headache, even for someone like Arsenal. You just hope South Norwood or Thornton Heath don't become gentrified like Bermondsey is otherwise we will never improve our ground.

Without knowing the full facts, not sure why Lewisham should have to reserve land for Millwall to use at a later date without any guarantee they will be able to complete a purchase.

When the Palace Board purchased Selhurst Park in the early 1920's, the deal was for all the land between Clifton Road and Park Road - a footprint big enough for a 100,000 capacity stadium and original plans for the ground were of that scale - with ample room for other facilities also.

Over time, the Palace Board saw fit to reduce their plans and first of all Lady Edridge girls school was built on much of the site that is now Wooderson Close - Croydon Council were under no obligation to hand back the land to Palace when L.E.. school shut in the early 80's and the bodged sale of the CPFC by Ray Bloye in 1980, allowing Sainsbury's to buy up most of the remaining land that made up the Car Park and the land the superstore was built on - instead of Palace leasing the land to them lead us to our current much reduced footprint.

Surely Millwall's Board must have made a decent amount from the sale of the Old Den (not entirely sure if they owned all the land?) and purchased sufficient land to develop the New Den to include any future possible expansion.

Can't really see why the local council should have to reserve land for any business that does not have the funds to purchase land that can demonstrably be put to better public use?

Not really a great deal of sympathy for Millwall to exist in any form, except as a quaint old former bit of dockland in East London - but the pitiful bastards do exist as a football club and the scheme in question is of no more threat to them than any other club in the country that face similar competition for land, including us.

Millwall is a useful way to attract those from the shallow end of the gene pool away from better clubs.

Believe so yes, think millwalls best plan of action is to treat the builders like Birmingham fans in the play offs.

Joke.
