Sky TV discussion

Hi guys.

I have just moved into a new build flat and have got sky 'multiroom'

The Ariel socket in the lounge already had the socket for sky, however the bedroom only has a standard ariel.

My question is, is it just a case of getting an adaptor for the bedroom? Or will I have to re-wire or something? I am a complete novice when it comes to electrics and sky are about as useful as a chocolate teapot.

If it makes any difference we have a 'communial' dish?

TIA.

Dont know about the communal dish thing, but generally for each box in a house they run a separate cable from the dish.

I may be talking rubbish but this is how my flat and the shared dish works.

You get a feed into the flat and you have something like this (ours is in with the fuse box etc.)

To view the link you have to Register or Login

That allows you to distribute tv feeds around the flat i think. This does normal TV aerial signal and satellite signal. So you may have to run another feed off that box to your other rooms if they have only done so into the lounge you might need to cable a new feed to the bedroom or wherever.

If you only have the two feeds in the front room, that is generally that. You can split the feeds running a cable from one feed into the aerial on same socket and that livens up the aerial in the bedroom but that is only one feed for each. To split signal into more feeds you need a stacker/de-stacker which is nearly impossible to install yourself. If the multiswitch (pictured above) is on the outside if the building it may be possible for a sky engineer to run a new cable direct from that box.

You may also be able to upgrade to Sky Q which means you would only need one feed into the main box while any other box works off the wifi and can operate with another tv - the problem with that though is if you have a communal dish it may not be compatible with Sky Q.

Sky Q won't work on a communal system unless they upgrade it (which I believe Sky will do if you ask, but expect to be waiting a while).

What does the socket in the lounge look like? Does it have a pass-through for the bedroom? Also, you sometimes find the socket in the bedroom has a second (sky) cable wired into it, but they've not connected it to anything. If you're ok with taking the faceplate off in the bedroom, it might be worth a look as it may give us a better idea of what they've done

Another thought would be to try and find the distribution amp - it's probably in a cupboard in the stairwell on the top floor (or near to the Sky dish if that isn't at the top of the block of flats). By comparing the number of outputs with the number of flats, you may get an idea of how many go to each flat

Although, if it's a new build, maybe they've installed a system that's compatible with Sky Q? Stranger things have happened...

There are quite a few buildings that have been made compatible. I did an install opposite Purley train station that had been converted already

Out of interest what is impossible about installing it? I got the impression from our set up that you get one feed and the box i posted a link to earlier does the splitting in my flat. Ours broke at one point and all i did was unscrew the feed and the out cables going to each room and replace the box.

I could easily be missing a trick here mind i am certainly no expert.

Thanks for the responses guys. I have an engineer coming out to me on Saturday as there are currently 79 channels that have 'no signal' so i'll chat with him (or her) and see what they say.

If you have an older sky + box, it will have an RF out socket.. You can run a standard RF wire from the back of your Sky + box and plug it into the ariel socket of another TV. Tune that TV to channel 68 and you will have sky on that TV. Although both TV's will show the same channel, so its not the same as having sky multi room where you can watch different channels in different rooms. It is free however. Later sky removed the RF out socket from their boxes to stop people doing this.

A stacker/de-stacker requires installation on flat side and multiswitch side, the second of which is not normally accessible. As for the picture, that distributes the cables around the house but for sat feeds you require at least 4 signal inputs. An aerial distribution would work on that though.

SKY

Probably AATOT, and I apologise if so.

Went to sign up to SKY TV, and they want 52.50 (discounted!) a month so I can watch Game of Thrones, cycling on Eurosport, box sets, football, F1 & boxing. Anyone else slightly astonished it is so much? Feel I can't justify that expenditure every month. Will just sign up for NOW TV to get GoT, and be satisfied with Netflix as well.

I have BT sports app free though for 2 years, I will just have to get by with that.

I have phone, broadband and Sports package. When you first sign up you get all the discounts and it seems reasonable. As the discounts start to drop off, the true price becomes quite a shock. From next month I start to pay over 90 which I am really beginning to question myself re my justifying such an outlay, particularly as their once good customer service is now very poor.

I guess Match of the Day is going to become a regular again in my flat. Incidentally, why is it never on BBC iPlayer? That is annoying.

Tip. Be in a relationship with someone who works for Sky. We have every channel and broadband for free.

Think its because Sky retain the rights for the highlights for use on Sky Sports News etc so the BBC only get to use it on MOTD and MOTD2 until like Tuesday when it hits iPlayer.

Last month they took out 102 for broadband and talk and variety with sports packages. We rarely use the landline for calls, but my wife insists we keep a landline phone. My wife said there'd be loads of great programmes to watch, yet as I scroll through the hundreds (it seems like hundreds) of the channels they offer me, pumping out vacuous crud, I usually end up watching the Discount Prophylactics and Lederhosen hours on QVC for want of anything better.

Once your 1st year deal expires, phone them and tell them you want to leave - they will very quickly replicate that original offer, if not improve it. Definitely don't ever pay full whack. No need at all.
