Disney World questions

If you stay on the Disney resort - What is the cheapest/easiest way to get to Universal Studios?

You should be able to get a bus or transfer from the hotel. Wont be expensive.

We used a hire car, having chosen a modest sized one, as you don't need anything fancy for these journeys.

We drove to places like Universal and out to Kennedy, also to and from the airport.

But for Disney days we made full use of the Disney coaches from the hotel.

By the way, Kennedy Space Center was easily worth a day out. Interesting, educational and
nice to have a break from the theme park queuing etc.

Car parking is more expensive than the hire car.

Its a 20-25 minute drive, however if Universal is something you really want to get the most out of it takes a couple of days I would suggest switching hotels and staying in a Universal one (Lowes Portofino is probably the best) - the fast track for Universal guests is a must have and if you are into Harry Potter saves a 2-3 hour queue by getting in the park an hour before everyone else.

We are staying at Disney and will make the trip to Universal.

I will be using the hire car for Airport - Disney Hotel and then using the free shuttle busses to the parks.

Only going to use the car for Disney - Universal when we want to go and Disney to Cape Kennedy

I looked it up and it's $30 a day for parking.

Bus. Book it at your hotel they will do for you.

Then will pick you up and take you back to hotel at alloted time. Go as early as possible. We went on every big ride without queueing an hour or two after arriving.

Long time ago now, but I went to Universal two months after the twin towers attack. Americans were barely flying then - the Brits (for the most part) had the theme park to ourselves. You could do the hulk ride and walk around the corner and get on again with a five minute queue.

Uber or a taxi

That's what we did.

I'm surprised anyone would go to Orlando without a car. Car hire is cheap and if you actually want to go anywhere other than the hotel you're staying in and the parks, you're stuffed.

This is the site I use for rental cars:

To view the link you have to Register or Login

They seem to be one of the most competitive and are reliable. There is an app for the iPhone and Android for Rentalcars, which will carry all booking information – I use this because you can select the type of car you need by seats, luggage space etc and then sort by price.

If you aren't going to use a hired car, Uber is a good alternative. There's some good information and advice here:

To view the link you have to Register or Login

The cost of getting from the Disney resort area to Universal will be between $15 and $20.

The new Harry Potter World at Universal Studios beats anything at the Magic Kingdom. You can ride the Hogwarts express between the Parks (quite amazing) and the rides are brilliant – even the queues are fun. If you are going at peak time and not staying at one of the Universal resorts, it might be worth paying for a Universal Express ticket. Express queues at Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure are usually a maximum of 15 minutes long . This is especially worth while if you are only planning to spend a day at Universal. You can buy these in advance, or in the Parks when you arrive. The price varies depending upon the crowd levels.

If you are staying at a Disney hotel, you should be able to book fast passes (Fast Pass Plus) 60 days in advance - it's 30 days for other guests - and this is essential if you want to ride on one of the 'premium' rides (such as the new 'Frozen' in Epcot, or 'Toy Story Mania' in Disney Studios or the 'Seven Dwarfs' Mine Train' in the Magic Kingdom) without waiting 2/3 hours. When you have your tickets, register them with Disney using the App:

To view the link you have to Register or Login

and you can book 3 Fast Passes for each day for all your party (note - there are no longer Fast pass machines within the Park by the rides as used to be the case). Once you have used those three, you can book a further one (and so on, for the rest of the day). This App will also tell you ride wait times etc, You really must do this unless you want to spend most of the day in queues at peak times.

One other obvious tip: Get to the Parks early. Even on the busiest days, the queues are relatively short for the first hour or so of the day.

This is the GPS navigation App which works brilliantly on the iPhone (there is also an Android version), which is free and you can download one map without charge (such as the whole of Florida):

To view the link you have to Register or Login

That will get you around Orlando with a GPS phone, even if you don’t have Internet access.

Don't forget the ESTA applications for all your family:

To view the link you have to Register or Login

Next time, why not consider hiring a Villa instead of paying a massive premium to stay at a Disney hotel? This is our Villa, available at a discount to genuine Palace fans:

To view the link you have to Register or Login

I travel to Orlando a couple of times each year, and am always happy to answer questions from any other adults like me who are really just big kids and love theme parks. Just send me a PM and I will be glad to give whatever advice I can.

Advertising on the BBS, James???

You, of all people, should know better...

As another regular visitor to the area myself, it worries me to think we may end up on the same flight one day...

Karl, the area around the Kennedy Space Center is lovely, if you have the time to fit it in and Cocoa Beach is superb.

I'm there next week, but to be fair we've done the theme parks to death. It's all about the Space Coast these days. Orlando only for the soccer and Clermont parkrun.
