Dislike them intensely.

But I must admit, they did have a point

Don't worry, we'll be there again next season. We need a new coach and a new skipper, (much as I rate Vince as a player, he just isn't an inspiring captain.)

I thought Surrey would have gone for a specialist batsman as Kumar's replacement

A decent player, but not really a replacement for Kumar. To be fair no one could replace him. Amla was the other option.
With Stoneman likely to be with England next year it leaves us struggling batting wise. We could certainly do with a good spin bowler as well.

A first class batting average of 28.85 must be around half of Sanga's

Sanga's test average is 57.40. Nearly double

It's staggeringly underwhelming.

Marsh will prove to be a good solid signing in all formats, but just don't try to compare him to Kumar Sangakarra and the contribution he made which will be missed hugely, that guy is one of the ALL time greats of Test cricket, and Surrey were privileged to have had him grace our game.
Will be interesting to see if Stoneman establishes himself this winter if not he will be back in the fold to strengthen our batting, the other bonus will be if we can see more consistency from Jason Roy and to possibly fill in the middle order slot of Sanga would be a real bonus. The other area of weakness is a good quality spinner and the young boy at Middlesex, think its Patel looked an excellent prospect a couple of years ago but then lost his way but seemed to have regained his mojo back last summer, maybe worth trying to tempt him to join.
The pace attack needs to find its way again and the reemergence of Meaker and others back to full fitness will be vital, as we need genuine pace along with our good medium pacers to make us a force again.
There is no reason why we cant be right up there challenging if we show more consistency allround as a team, as we saw with Essex a very average team of what can be achieved if working as a unit and a very good captain.

I asked a friend in Australia how good a signing he thought Marsh would be. He replied:

"What is important to Surrey ?

The County Championship ?

50 overs ?

T 20?"

It's actually a very good question. I've always assumed the county championship is the main aim. But maybe not?

If a one-day trophy is main aim, then Marsh might turn out to be a decent signing.

Not only Surrey supporters, but others too - at the beginning of each season what do you most hope your county might win?

The Championship is still the main prize for me Ian, but ironically I only go to 50 over games.

Yes. The prestige prize is still the championship. Like you I go to all the 50 over games as for me they are the best value for entertainment. I go to the odd county game.but would go to a lot more if I thought the priority would be to win on the last day. You very rarely get a last day like the one v Somerset.
From the clubs point of view 20 20 is their priority as that is where the dosh is.
