One rule for the clever, and another for the rest of us.

Cambridge undergraduate may be spared jail because it would "damage her career".

Not sure I would want this person who stabbed her boyfriend during an alcohol and drug fuelled row operating on my friends and family......

Extraordinary.

She should be paired with the Stanford University rapist student who was shown similar leniency.

Can you imagine a judge using similar glowing terms about some disadvantaged kid with potential to make it as a professional footballer who stabbed someone in a drug related gang incident?

"Judge Ian Pringle QC, sitting at Oxford crown court, said he would take an “exceptional” course and defer sentence for four months, hinting that Woodward will not be jailed because of her talent. “It seems to me that if this was a one-off, a complete one-off, to prevent this extraordinary able young lady from not following her long-held desire to enter the profession she wishes to would be a sentence which would be too severe,” he said."

I'm quite uncomfortable about the judges comments. Hopefully one of our legal bunch will be along shortly to explain why this is quite usual and point us at the relative point in sentencing guidance.

Well said.

When did talent excuse a drink and drug fuelled stabbing?

She's a potential heart surgeon.

Intelligent people can be bad too. Not sure the judge has managed to separate the two elements here.

Probably not intelligent enough to do so

It's a deferment. All sentencing options remain open.

It doesn't really sound that way to be fair.

What's the deferment all about? What's it supposed to achieve?
