For me and I guess it's personal but B.B. King Indianola Mississippi Seeds.

Generally everyone should have Dark Side of the Moon, Pablo Honey and The Doors.

So difficult, I could be here all night but if it was 3 albums for the desert island it would have to be:

Who's Next - The Who
Blue - Joni Mitchell

I really can't make my mind up with the 3rd so will have to think about it. Those 2 are definitely there though. Bowie, Kate Bush, Annie Lennox, Led Zepp, Sabbath, Diana Krall, Jack White (Raconteurs), Costello (aka Mr Krall) too hard.

To stop this thread being renamed 'my favourite albums by my favourite bands' I am going to suggest 3 albums that are not my usual musical taste;

Fleetwood Mac - Rumours
Sade - Diamond life
Enya - Watermark

Now onto proper music;

The Clash - The Clash
The Stone Roses - The Stone Roses
Madness - One Step Beyond

Astral Weeks - Van Morrison
Liege and Lief - Fairport Convention
Exile on Main Street - Rolling Stones

Pet Sounds by The Beach Boys always does well in top album lists. I admire it too - but rarely listen to it.

Live at the Regal - BB King
Bluesbreakers 'Beano' album - John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers
Led Zeppelin I, II, III, IV, Houses of the Holy and Physical Graffiti

I guess the purpose of the thread is to highlight albums that are absolutely essential to hear, not just personal favourites.

A really good listen to Blues will start you off on a good footing...Because many of the blues originators released their songs singly, you're going to need Best ofs by people like Muddy Waters (also try Hard Again), Howlin Wolf, etc etc. There are many scholarly and inexpensive compilations about.

Of course, don't forget Robert Johnson's complete tecordings.

I suppose the question is which one would it be if you could only keep one.

You have the four eras there. Johnson the beginning, BB King electrifying it, John Mayall etc. British blues power, and Zeppelin the peak.

If you could have 'only one' is another question entirely and, pretty much unanswerable, I think.

To cover this properly, it might better to offer lists by 'genre'... I'll start with 'rock and roll/rockabilly' (it would be interesting to see other people's take on their favourite genres or particular artists and what they deem 'essential')

This is an area, as Nostrils asked on the first page, where you're probably best off buying compilations.

ROCK AND ROLL/ROCKABILLY RECOMMENDATIONS - A STARTER
I'd recommend you find decent collections for at least the following: Elvis Presley (certainly everything he did for Sun Records), Little Richard, Buddy Holly, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, Bo Diddley, Chuck Berry, Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochran, Roy Orbison and Johnny Burnette and the Rock and Roll Trio. Good quality, inexpensive career retrospectives shouldn't be difficult to find.

In addition, I'd seek out a couple of quality rockabilly compilations, you can acquire pretty big sets quite cheaply. Again, a retrospective of Sun Records is a must - for other compilations, look out for names like Sonny Burgess, Sleepy La Beef, Wanda Jackson, Glen Glenn, Dale Hawkins, Jimmy Lloyd and Mac Curtis and you won't go far wrong.

Finally, check this out, 'We're Gonna Rock We're Gonna Roll' is a brilliant review of the kind of music that went into the melting pot that led to the birth of rock and roll... blues, R&B, western swing, doo wop and so on leading up to Bill Haley and Elvis, a superb 4CD set:
