Cos, I'm greedy, I'll do a quick punk one as well, then leave it to others to offer their thoughts...

PUNK RECOMMENDATIONS - A STARTER
Slightly different as there are particular albums, rather than compilations, I think you need to get the basics in place. This is by no means exhaustive, but we'll start with a fairly obvious 'top ten' in no particular order:
Never Mind the Bollocks Here's the Sex Pistols
The Clash first album
Damned Damned Damned
In the City by the Jam
The Scream - Siouxsie and the Banshees
Rattus Norvegicus and/or No More Heroes - The Stranglers
Inflammable Material - Stiff Little Fingers
Germ Free Adolescents - X Ray Spex
Pink Flag - Wire
Ramones - Ramones

This is a basic intro to key albums, many of these went on to do other great work worth following up (especially the Clash and the Jam). There are lots more not mentioned that you could possibly get away with just finding on compilations (Buzzcocks released some great albums, but Singles Going Steady covers a lot of ground brilliantly). Worth seeking out are 999, Generation X, the Ruts, UK Subs, the Slits, Vibrators, ATV, the Adverts, Subway Sect and many more.

This is a fairly 'British' listing (Ramones aside, who fit better perhaps on our side of the Atlantic than with the more arty American punk scene). For American 'punk', check out New York Dolls, Patti Smith, Television, Richard Hell and the Void Oids, Blondie, Talking Heads, etc.

Great list. As for follow up albums The Stranglers 3rd and 4th albums Black & White and The Raven were fantastic

I think Eno himself rates "Stranded" as the best Roxy album, though, not that I really agree with him.
