This is an interesting Police tactic that has been used at several high profile local derbies including Portsmouth v Southampton, Blackburn v Burnley and Swansea v Cardiff. It involves compulsory travel by bus or coach for all away fans with match tickets only collected on the day, often at some halfway location. It actually requires less Police as all resources are in one controlled location.
Due to Premier League regulations Police are not able to specify dates for any fixture except in exceptional circumstances but this tactic could well have been used if both games were at weekends. It is difficult to see how it could be implemented for an evening game due to a lack of sufficient available transport during rush hours. For a typical example see the video below. An infamous 'wall' screen was also used at this game.

To view the link you have to Register or Login

It is difficult to see how Southern Railway could fit any special trains into the crowded rush hour schedule and there is no street parking within 2 miles as all local roads are now permit parking only.

It is interesting to find out what restrictions fans would be willing to endure as any tactics employed at one game are likely to be replicated at the return fixture. I would certainly expect to be held back for at least 20 mins.

How would that work for Palace fans like myself who live in Brighton? Surely it's laughable to think I'd have to travel to Selhurst to then travel back to Brighton...

I remember reading about a Blackburn fan who lived across the road from Turf Moor, but had to travel to Ewood Park to catch a bus to get to their game against Burnley

I'd like to think that the police let him out at the end of the game so he could just go home straight away...

As stated above, all fans have to travel by the organised buses so some away fans even had to travel for the start from the ground despite living nearer the home team ground.
In 2012 Portsmouth ran 46 buses for their game at Southampton with 34 starting from Fratton Park and another 12 from nearby Langstone.

If it was to happen Police might possibly allow a pick-up at a halfway location near Crawley but with rush hour services and school bus requirements I cannot see where they could find sufficient buses.

In theory Brighton offer free travel to both home and away fans on trains and buses to the Amex within their travel zone including travel via Brighton or Lewes to Falmer on production of a valid match ticket. So you would only need to buy train tickets to Haywards Heath. Stations between Worthing and Eastbourne are also included so you could also park near a station and catch a train to Falmer.
However as it is an evening match trains from Falmer will be limited.

Can you really see the Police allowing everybody to share trains?

I have tried searching some forums on travel problems to the Amex but Brighton have yet to play any other London club, who would all have more localised support, at home.
Most northern clubs will use a large numbers of coaches so do not have the same park and ride travel problems, especially for evening games. They play Southampton on Sunday 29th October at home so it may be worth checking their forums after this game.

Those of us travelling by train were held back / corraled after the league defeat there and were forced to stand in the area outside the away end in pouring rain for about 25 mins. This enabled most home fans travelling by train to have cleared off on trains before we were escorted to station.
They did stick us on a special train back to East Croy that stopped at Gatwick and sat there for ages while changed driver.

Will never forget that lovely experience having been smashed 3-0.

One time I tried to leave a game early and only because I was due to play a game myself that afternoon. Police having none of it and I ended up turning up late and getting dropped to the bench...

Capped a brilliant day that did

You should have stayed in the concourse. Bars were open and we even drank out in the seats.

Always used to park at the nearest end of Moulsecoombe (council estate at the end of the footpath from the railway), but since we last played there the council has made the whole of Moulsecoombe and Coldean residents parking only, and the locals are too thick to realise they could make good money from 'park on my drive'.

BHA have however created a car park called 'The Bridge' which is pretty much in the same sort of place. £15 bookable online through their website, and no 'hold back' after the game, unlike the university car parks.

To be fair cheaper option is as Chris said, park at somewhere like Lewes station car park for a couple of quid and get the free train to and from the ground. Just went for the easiest option for my family to be honest.

Coaches are the 'sensible' option, but of course we dont all live near Selhurst. Maybe if CPFC did a couple of pickups en-route that might help some people.

There are several train stations west of Brighton and before Brighton where you can park, obviously you then have to change for Falmer. Good luck to anyone trying to park at Lewes.

Indeed. And whichever nearby station you park at you still have to either hang around and wait for a train, or share breathing space with that lot. Looking at the total cost of trains for the group of 3 of us, really couldn't be arsed with it all and just took the lazy option of their car park

I went by train for the first game there and used the park and ride for the second one. Both took ages afterwards. For the Play Off game we used the club coach and it was definitely the easiest, so will be doing that again this time.

What do you think the points scheme will be for tickets? I thought I'd have no chance but maybe I will as on over 4000
