That's uk rules, believe eu rules are less strict. So better buying British. Even more so for pork

Coop meat is good and all red tractor standard or above. Their chickens are Elmwood which is inside but MASSIVE space, clean conditions, natural light and fresh food.

Eh? I always understood that Elmwood was nothing more than a now defunct, welfare standard originally created by the co-op themselves.

I looked it up and been dropped by a couple of Supermarkets. I am not sure how the law applies for Chicken etc. On the Waitrose site all the Chicken proudly states Produced in the UK. I had wondered if that was just butchered here and packed. In a lot of trades you can state Made in the UK if its been assembled here despite some if not all the parts being imported.

How 'old' generally is their stuff? If I eat meat, I feel much more comfortable knowing that the animal has had a nicer, longer life than this 6 weeks bollocks.

I must add, rarely is a bbs thread informative and interesting these days, so thanks to those who have made worthwhile contributions.

That's a particularly good provenance card, some of the suppliers that should know better give very little away. Abel and Cole springs to mind. It really should be made simpler, people should know where the meat is from, whether it's halal, age at slaughter, welfare etc

I've just copied this from T&G's website:

'Every piece of meat we offer has been raised naturally, lived the best of lives and is completely hormone, antibiotic and cruelty-free. After all, only animals that have been well bred and cared for can result in something that tastes truly amazing.'

There is a world of difference between the factory farmed stuff that supermarkets pump out and the meat that's available through some of our butchers.

You might have to pay a bit more, but find yourself a good one and you won't look back.

I think it's something that we, as customers, really should be pushing towards.

Over the last few years those that govern the general food industry have largely made acceptable progress in terms of transparency; but the supply of meat, poultry, fish and game (through supermarkets in particular) still leaves a lot to be desired IMHO.

Been trying to remember the quote and I cannot find it now but to get the same Vitamin and Mineral consumption from a Tomato today you would need to eat 10 to get the same as you would have got from 1 30-40 years ago. That is pretty much with all Fruit and Veg partly due to soil depletion and also modifying and cross breeding for size, colour, shape and speed of growth.

What a ****ed up world! Wonder what our food chain will look lie in the next 30 years

A dairy cow produces 9,000kg of milk per year compared with 2,000kg in 1956. In a pattern pertinent to Professor Michael Crawford's work, a 2kg broiler chicken is now produced in six or seven weeks instead of 14. Can such rapid growth really be sustained without a loss of meat quality? Professor Crawford believes it can't.

Not sure if it's still on Netflix, I saw it over a year ago, but this has some interesting stuff in it about the different ways cattle are raised around the world

A friend who lived in holland for a while recalls how food actually tastes out there, even from supermarkets its the competition over here which is out of control..and us consumers for wanting stuff cheap.

TBF they are pretty good with their poultry, the best of the major supermarkets I'd say. I do a bit of spatchcocking and filleting with the whole birds and from memory having done so with a tesco example the bones were like twigs - always a tell-tale sign, there was also one that hadn't been gutted/cleaned properly - the smell of shit and rot was disgusting and you could see the remnants of feed from the upper tract. Never again. Co-op ones are generally pretty sound.

Rapidly going Vegan, sitting here with my Bean and Lentil Soup and Ciabatta I stopped eating Kebabs a few years ago, bet some on here have eaten from this "manufacturer" as he is based in SWanley, or was.
