The British palate ..

I can remember my grandfather turning his nose up frequently at various takeaways I used to bring home back in the 70's . Stock comment was usually " you won't catch me eating that foreign muck " .. ironic that these days our choice of food is probably nearly all foreign ..pizza, bolognaise, curry, paella, etc etc.. Do we prefer foreign food now , or do we still tend to stick to traditional British food ..? I'd say in my house its 75% in favour of foreign . Sunday roast is still the event of the week though ..

I think speed and convenience comes into it too, especially midweek.

Busy working folk would rather bung some pasta or rice in a pan than spend the same amount of time peeling spuds. This then leads to them selecting meals that go with pasta/rice.

On the weekend, more fancy putting in the extra effort and time for meals such as roasts.

Other than roast dinner, and fry up, I'm not entirely sure what great British dishes there are.

Didn't we all survive on pie or liver and bacon before?

Yes, we should all celebrate old fashioned English dishes like Spam. Maple syrup anyone?

Plus toad in the hole, star gazey pie, suet pudding, Arbroath smokies, Brunswick pie, jellied eels, pie & mash, drop scones, Yorkshire Solomon Grundy, etc.

And the most obvious one, fish and chips

We should celebrate our pies, sausages, stews, puddings, breakfast, snacks, fish and chips, roast dinners.

When you are away a long time, you really miss these things. You shouldnt put this food down.

I think British food on the whole is horrible, stodgy bollocks. Besides maybe fish and chips twice a year I don't eat anything you'd consider to be typically British - and don't start on me about roasts - they're shit.
