Yesterday marked a new low in the already desperate state of British politics:

- a senior government minister fails to apologise for off the cuff remarks that place a UK citizen in danger of a lengthy prison sentence in Iran; he says it is unfortunate if his remarks were 'misconstrued' when they are in fact completely unambiguous.

- a second government minister meets a foreign prime minister and discusses sensitive issues either a) without the knowledge of the foreign office and the PM's office or b) with their knowledge and connivance in order to promote a deniable back channel.

- a junior minister says it will take three weeks before existing reports on the impact of Brexit can be made available for publication raising the possibility that the government will find itself in contempt of parliament;

- a welsh assembly member takes his own life following allegations of misconduct.

I honestly can't believe that the governing classes can rule in such a high handed and shoddy way; May is clearly a prisoner of the Brexit wing who feel themselves untouchable as we stumble ever onward to the abyss. It is deeply depressing even if this chaos has to hasten the end of this awful government

We've been here before with May. She doesn't appear the sort to gracefully bow out based on everything that's happened since the election results, so it'll just be a further win for Corbyn imo.

And again, who steps in should May resign? There doesn't really appear to be a single obvious candidate waiting in the wings at the moment.

I would always take the word of the Jewish Chronicle over any member of the current government. I think she is in a bit of mess and hope she takes the rest of the sorry cabinet with her.

Is this all a stitch up?

Looks like they have had enough of trying to implement Brexit ... cue a general election ... better to be out of power and let Labour take the flack?

Personally I assumed from the start that the meetings were known about, but on a 'deniable' basis. Maybe I've just watched too much Homeland.

Patel is too self-regarding a politician to allow herself to be set up like that.

Not sure they are competent enough for this to be planned by them.

A few thoughts. May, Rudd, Hammond and Fallon don't believe in Brexit but are/were having to implement it. The Brexiters like Boris and Priti were only supporting it for career reasons. May became leader because she was like Macavity. The end result of Boris, IDS and Farage and Gove's Brexit victory (and the lobbying against Brexit by big business) will be a Corbynite government that implements all the policies that big business and the Tory right will hate. Talk about Karma. Oh and then the Corbynites will have to implement the real cuts and austerity.
