Shearer: Dementia documentary BBC1

Now on. Very interesting. Dawn Astleís account of her dadís deterioration was very moving.

I think its Astle where there's a close up of him heading one of those old brown leather footballs, which is squashed up to about half size by the impact with his head

They were a nightmare, I remember when they came at directly at you there was no way of chickening out and you had to take the blow to the head. I can well imagine a cf of the day getting a bit punchy.
The modern ball is nothing like.

On the other hand I don't think someone in their 70's saying their memory is going is worthwhile evidence. Equally I don't see any harm in banning heading for under 11's, sooner the better really.

Will the FA do anything, of the own volition absolutely not. It needs a parliamentary committee to turn the spotlight on them.

Sexyrazors ex fellas dad is Duncan Forbes who played for Norwich City, he has severe dementia now and the doctors do blame it on heading the ball. However, when Ron Saunders was manager, part of the training was heading medicine balls.....which kind of makes it worse.

they had a fund raising day a few seasons back and team mates were interviewed...including Martin Peters, who is suffering with the same illness.

As an aside, does anyone know why they are called medicine balls?

Who also played for Norwich iirc. Of course it might be Norwich that is to blame.

I think there is a case for it making little difference to the game as so few headers take place anyway at those ages. Also coaches simply don't do heading drills. Overall i think it's hardly worth bothering with though on account of it being so rare and hardly a massive risk.

I did a lot of reading about head injuries when my son started playing rugby.

I get the impression you have to be heading hundreds of footballs a week for it to be a considerable risk and i would expect clubs to take that into consideration when training. Not convinced from what i have seen and read about there would ever be justification for rule changes. Just seems like we might have had a generation that got unlucky with primitive equipment and training drills.

An interesting watch.

The balls now are better suited to being headed in comparison to the old brown leather ones.

More research/investigation is required.

Bought a ball last week from Sports Direct for my 8-year-old and it was like a fvcking rock. Could barely kick it let alone head it.

Heading the old leather balls was a different game, apart from possibly heading the lace ( not frilly stuff), when wet they weighed a ton.

We had no other choice as kids, if you could get one, we were playing a game at Thornton Heath Rec when the bloke who owned the ball took it home and so ended the game.....he had to get home to listen to Dick Barton-special agent on the radio.

a bit different but a while back a pro wrestler murdered his family then committed suicide and the subsequent scans of his brain showed major deterioration (his signature move was a diving headbutt)

To view the link you have to Register or Login

wrestling has since got more serious about concussions and banned chair shots to the head.

Kicking the damn things hurt if you didn't catch them absolute right - as to how Bobby Charlton smashed them as hard as he did in his prime...

The injuries to Shearer's elbows must be worse than those of his head.
