Landmark study links Tory austerity to 120,000 deaths

Austerity Kills - projected to be 200,000 by 2020 - all for a totally pointless exercise - health warning our government kills its own citizens

To view the link you have to Register or Login

The Conservatives have been accused of “economic murder” for austerity policies which a new study suggests have caused 120,000 deaths.

The paper found that there were 45,000 more deaths in the first four years of Tory-led efficiencies than would have been expected if funding had stayed at pre-election levels.

On this trajectory that could rise to nearly 200,000 excess deaths by the end of 2020, even with the extra funding that has been earmarked for public sector services this year.

Real terms funding for health and social care fell under the Conservative-led Coalition Government in 2010, and the researchers conclude this “may have produced” the substantial increase in deaths.

The study, published in BMJ Open today, estimated that to return death rates to their pre-2010 levels spending would need to increase by £25.3bn.

Doesn't surprise me really.

They made my brother homeless due to cuts to mental health and my dad had to wait 1 hour 25 mins for an ambulance when suffering chest pains last year.

We were lucky I guess.

My old neighbour, never signed on... always worked... she kept collapsing. She asked for a carer to pop in to make breakfast/help her out of bed/do evening meal... council refused.
She was found on her bathroom floor, barely alive. She’d been there for 2days. Never regained consciousness.

The worst thing about austerity is that it didn't work. It was a complete and utter failure, with the government failing to hit its own measures for success again and again and again.

Yet despite this some in the future will suggest the same. Madness.

“Welfare for Osborne was just a bottomless pit of savings, and it didn’t really matter what the human consequences were, because focus groups had shown that the voters they wanted to appeal to were very anti-welfare, and therefore there was almost no limit to those anti-welfare prejudices,”

Bank of England under instruction of government gave banks and other financial institutions £475bn of free money via quantitative easing. While at the same time starving people of money and public services through austerity. It's an utter disgrace and demonstrates that the system is run not for us but the elite.

Though left leaning I try to be tolerant of those who are right leaning.

However it is very hard, almost impossible, to take such a stance, when you know the policies of this government are not well meaning but badly implemented, but are willful in the pain and suffering they cause.

The selfish 'I am alright jack' mentality that really made it into our psyche under Thatcher, and has us as a society, less caring and more dismissive of people who suffer, allow an uncaring Government to introduce policies that damage many.

Stop voting Tory is the only solution I can see.

shocking state of affairs we see examples of these poor souls young and old dying or left to fend for themselves with terrible consequences on a daily basis now, any wonder so many voted for Labour in the last election, how are people still voting for the Nasty Party amazes me.

The Sun have run the same story although they've tried to not make specific mention of it being a Conservative problem.

Well, we've known for sometime that Austerity was killing all sorts, including vets of Afghanistan etc.

The Tories' simply don't care - as Cleggy states, the votes they were after didn't like Welfare and were quite happy to see those needing it suffer.

The blame lies with both the politicians AND those who voted for them. IMHO.

Cuts had to be made because of the awful mess the previous Govt left behind.

What about that financial genius Gordon Brown, selling off our gold reserves at its low point?

I'm not saying the Tories cuts were ALL necessary and all directed in the right places, but we undoubtedly had to make big cuts.

And the previous comment about QE are plain wrong - it was never free money! - all that cash doesn't just stay in the banks earning interest - Banks who benefited from that cheap funding were obliged to lend it on in the form of mortgages and loans to small businesses.

The bottom line is though the govts of Blair and Brown encouraged rampant borrowing without thinking ahead and now we have to pay the price in the form of cuts.

Why focus on this now Morality and decency have never squared with support for the Tories so do not waste your time making the argument because they will always deny this.

  1. The banking crisis was not the Labour government's fault. As much as you wish to blame the borrowing on them it was an international problem - one that nobody's government protected them from, and ours still haven't (that's after seven years of Tory rule).
  2. The response to recession does not have to be to cut spending. We've spent our way out of it before and could have this time by taking advantage of cheaper interest rates on borrowing.

We undoubtedly did not. It was an ideological choice, and even on its own terms a total failure.

We should have borrowed more, when it was cheap to do so, and grown the economy. Osborne eventually realised this. You can't cut your way out of an economic downturn.

The problem is that there are too many of your kind around making such excuses, showing they have no sympathy for those that are less fortunate than themselves.

It is your heartless bastard attitude that gives permission for the ***** in power to introduce measures that achieve next to little beyond human suffering and protecting the already wealthy from participating in the 'we are all in this together' lie.

This just isn't true. Also the Conservatives have consistently used QE but into banks rather than public services.
